A good idea for a fun camp would be driving off from Whites on the 1st, Yellows on the 2nd, Greens 3rd and Reds 4th etc etc...
We have a competition as part of Captains Week (fun charity fundraising events) each year, where everyone plays 6 holes off each of the whites, yellows and reds

Therein lies the problem. Ego or peer group pressure is always going to come into play and unless golfers, not just seniors, but newer players etc are aware of the potential benefits of playing from forward markers they won't do it. I think there has to be an onus on clubs where forward tees are rated for men that they publicise and encourage people to use these markers
All our tees are rated for both sexes.
The only problem with encouraging widespread play of the frontmost and rearmost tees is that the teeing areas are smaller so excessive use can result in increased wear a particular problem on the foremost where irons are more regularly used.

I was actually surprised at the space on some of the red tees last night...much more than on most of the white tees.

At one private club, they have just put permanent markers on the fairway (forward) to create a new rated "course", without installing any new permanent tee boxes. Juniors, and anyone else, can play from those markers - just tee off within two club-lengths and no nearer the hole than the marker. They get a lot of use and without much added expense. The club has 285 junior members - they are doing their part to introduce players to the game.

I understand that but a double edged sword. If players are struggling of their "designated" tees it makes sense to move forward and I guess the trade off would be less wear on the yellows

Yup, and the other answer is education, you don't go forward just to enable taking an iron and a chunk out of the tees.

I only ever play off competition tees, whether white or black. Why practice or play off yellows then it’s almost a different course when you play a comp. I would never play off red tees

Surely if you are playing forward regularly (not just the odd practice round) ten you are doing so as it matches your age/ability and so you're more likely to use what you would have done from say the yellows

Bully for you. For many of us, we like to play social golf. Even our monthly stablefords over the winter are off the yellows or would you be too snobbish to demean yourself coming that far forward.

I play off the tee that is available which makes the course the challenge it was designed to be

We have blue tees like this which would suit many of our lady members, I have never seen a lady playing from them!!

I go out with my six year old grandson on a sunday afternoon, they are more than long enough for him, we play 9 holes and he enjoys it enormously, I can't understand why there not used more.

Interesting article on the subject.

That was the article that’s started the debate off

It’s a tough one for a lot of clubs

Most established ones won’t be able to build new tees further down the fairway to enable people to play short courses

But most of those clubs will have tee markers placed somewhere to allow players to play a shorter course

285 junior members ?

How many courses does this club have and how many members overall

There isn't a need for most courses to build more tees. Most courses have red/blue tees and a rated course for these anyway. Why the fixation on building more aside it not fitting the narrative

No but sometimes the red tees are where the original tees were before the course was lengthened.
I would imagine various other changes would have also taken place like changes to fairway/rough lines and bunkering. If you can’t hit a 460cc driver with a modern golf ball the same distance an old guy with a heavy coat on could hit a hickory shafted wooden headed driver with an old wound ball, golf will always be too much of a challenge regardless of where you tee off from

I find that very snobbish and exclusive
