Random Irritations

The anti-cycling brigade.

Sadly all too common to be subject to their venomous distaste when cycling responsibly and safely on the roads. I keep hoping to have a conversation with one that cuts in front of me, or squeezes so close that their wing mirrors just about hit me. Something along the lines of "why" followed by explaining how dangerous their unnecessary manoeuvre was and asking were they actually trying to kill me.

Fact is I'm a road user and entitled to be there. If I hold them up for a few seconds what's the big deal? It would hold them up much longer if they caused an accident.

Sorry Amanda , it wasn’t aimed at you. One of my close friends is also a spandex wearer on Sundays and also despises the majority of the cyclist on the road for the very same reasons you do.

While on the topic of roads and it's probably been done before - 20mph zones.

A large reason the roads are in a state is due to councils spending a large percentage of their budget on these pointless zones, rather than fixing pot holes. Outside a school I can understand but they're litterally everywhere now.

Does anyone actually stick to 20? Has anyone been caught speeding in them?
On a similar note - 30mph roads with speed bumps you can only do 20 over. Make your mind up!

The cost of eating out.
There's a new cafe opened near me recently so just for curiosity, I looked at their online menu...
2 eggs on a slice of sourdough bread...£5.95
A glass of still water...£1.30
Thank goodness I can cook

Most of the speed bumps around out way are ineffectual if your car has a moderately wide wheelbase.

I just drive right over them and don’t even feel that they are there.
We have some like that round my way, but some others that go all the way across and feel like they're about 6 inches high!

We've lived in our residential development / estate of 1000 homes for 25 years.
There aren't speed humps as such but block paved ~4 inch changes in elevation every 30 yards or so across the full width of the road and wherever there's a junction.
We also have a 20mph limit. Anything over 20 and the suspension gets a real jolt (or over 10 in the Golf R).
There are always loads of kids and dog walkers about and the 20 limit feels about right for a residential area. I'm not aware of any collisions in the 25 years we've been here and I've never heard anyone complain. It feels like a safe place to get around whatever mode of transport you use; unlike the rest of the town.
