Random Irritations

The anti-cycling brigade.

Sadly all too common to be subject to their venomous distaste when cycling responsibly and safely on the roads. I keep hoping to have a conversation with one that cuts in front of me, or squeezes so close that their wing mirrors just about hit me. Something along the lines of "why" followed by explaining how dangerous their unnecessary manoeuvre was and asking were they actually trying to kill me.

Fact is I'm a road user and entitled to be there. If I hold them up for a few seconds what's the big deal? It would hold them up much longer if they caused an accident.

I doubt you're jumping red lights, riding the wrong way up one way streets, carving the pavements, going through pelican crossings when theres pedestrians crossing and the traffic has stopped.
As someone who has always cycled up until a few years ago, the reckless number of cyclists give the majority a bad name.
There's a set of lights in Kensington High Street that the majority of cyclists ignore, that is until the Police have a purge and book everyone who they catch that morning. It surprising how many for months after obey those red lights.

Also bought a Garmin rear facing radar. Cracking piece of safety equipment. Alerts to vehicles approaching and indicates their rate of approach - red they're coming up fast, amber they're being sensible.

No I'm not. As are none of the cyclists I ride with or encounter. Rural setting though.

It's the ridiculous wide-sweeping hatred of ALL cyclists. It's never ever tempered with a note that it's those behaving like idiots. See above for such ridiculous statements. They are by no means isolated.

Er a few?…

Lime bikes recorded jumping the red lights 84 times in one hour…

You have literally proven the point. One location. In fact (it's behind a paywall) I think one location and one type of e bike that's hired?

I'd ditch the whole e bike and e scooter concept if they're all ridden so irresponsibly.

The thing is, responsibly used e-bikes are a great boon to people who aren't physically able to cycle without assistance. Just the sort of thing that should be encouraged given the lack of suitable public transport in many areas.
Just as with motoring in general (if not society in general) actually enforcing the law would benefit everyone.
And while we're here, let's pause and remember that today, and tomorrow, pedestrians and cyclists will be killed and badly injured by motor vehicles, not just randomly irritated.

When I drive the 2.5 miles to Tesco and the same back, I will probably see around 40 to 50 vehicles exceeding the maximum permitted speed by more than 5 miles per hour and 1 or 2 going through a red light instead of stopping.
Very unlikely to see a single cyclist on the road - very occasionally I will see one on the pedestrian pavement.

While on the topic of roads and it's probably been done before - 20mph zones.

A large reason the roads are in a state is due to councils spending a large percentage of their budget on these pointless zones, rather than fixing pot holes. Outside a school I can understand but they're litterally everywhere now.

Does anyone actually stick to 20? Has anyone been caught speeding in them?

Agreed. I was being (kind of) facetious.

Another irritation is the amount of mud currently being left on the roads by farm traffic. Another law that never seems to be enforced. It's dangerous, especially on a bike.

As a failed pedestrian I’m all in favour of 20mph in towns. Does dropping 10mph really impact relatively short journey times in towns? Is 5 minutes extra such a big issue. The stats for fatalities at 30 and above make unpleasant reading but the stats for 20 make surprisingly good reading.

Pointless zones; are there designated areas to have accidents?

Speeding; if the difference in the severity of injuries is so great between 20 & 30, a speeder doing 25 is way better than a speeder doing 35.
