...... visitors taking part in members competitions? For example, could I pay the visitors green fee at your club and then proceed to play in a Midweek Stableford or Weekend Medal, for handicap purposes?

To be honest, I'm not even sure what my own clubs stance on this is, but am interested to hear the various viewpoints on the subject.

I played in a stableford once at an away club. I marked the member's card and was told if I played better than 36 points, it would be forwarded to my home club.

I'd only turned up for a lazy Saturday afternoon game.....???

Still not sure it was legal for either of us.

I don't think we do it Del, if anything for using would have to be Sat PM as there would be hell to pay if a visitor got a members tee time on a Sat morning for the medal

I would think that, unless it's an Open, no.

if our club is selected to host the area s.g.u. comp. we are allowed to apply to play in any course involved in that comp. if times are available, and be involved in their medal ,for handicap purposes only

Don't know the answer but...

Several years ago, there were 4 of us kicking our heels on a Saturday morning in Joburg hanging about waiting for our evening flight back home. Deciding that there was plenty of time to play golf first we presented ourselves at The Wanderers Golf Club and asked if we could get a round.

"Very sorry gents but we have a big comp on today and are not allowing green fees on until much later" we were told. "However, if you would like to play in the comp (team comp with best 2 out of 4 counting) then we can sign you in at a member's guest rate".

Did we bite his hand off

As it happened we played very well as a team and when we saw the scores in the clubhouse we decided against putting our card in as a) it would probably have been a bit embarrassing and b) we couldn't hang around for the prize giving.

same for us

biggest issue would be the computerised start sheet, handicapping software etc

we have club competitions, and we have invitations, then opens (where you invite yourself!)

you cannot play another course 'for handicap', it's not permitted. If you meant as a Q competiton then back to above answer.

My club would not allow it and I can understand why to a certain extent as the tee times for comps are always full and allowing non members to play would remove slots for existing members. That said, we do allow members to enter competitions after the last tee time if they have been unable to book a slot and I would not see much of a problem in members and their guests being allowed to enter at that time. Take next Tuesday, we have a 4 man team comp and I have 3 members from my old club playing. Would be good to have been able to enter the comp with them and it would not cause a problem with the computerised score keeping as we cannot use that for team comps.

We hardly seem to have proper competitions anymore unfortunately, although it's something the club is working on.

I remember once playing in the stableford, while the 18 and below handicappers were playing their stroke play. We had a german gentleman who wasn't a member, who rocked up on a 21 handicap. The other two in the group were off 9 and 12, so we shared a buggy and went for it. He knocked out a 2 over par front 9, and a 5 (if I recall correctly) over par back 9. Off 21.... Unbelievable. Hilariously though, a Korean gentleman turned up with what must have been an even more laughable handicap, and beat him by 3 points.

So yes, our club will let anyone play, never seen anybody asked for a handicap certificate either come to think of it. As long as you throw money over the counter, they seem to be happy enough. Comical.

With regards to the German, when he started playing, he'd been given a handicap of 39 by his club. As is the German way, he had thrown money at lessons etc, and had a tidy golf game, but his handicap was taking ages to follow him down.

Never happens at my club... Don't think it's officially allowed though very rarely I see someone plyaing as a guest, but that's only in doubles competitions (4bbb, greensome,foursome...)

Not allowed at my club unless it is an Open event. Can't see members being thrilled when an unknown rocks in off the street, presents a 12 handicap certificate and goes out and shoots 40+ to win and then disappers. As it happens green fees aren't encouraged per se and most guest are members guests and again, if the member brings a guest up he can't then get them to mark the card in a comp for him

so the op is saying, anyone not a member of the club should be allowed to play in a club comp.!!!! i pay £820 a year to be a member and to have the privilege that goes with that and entering club comps. is one of them, how can it be right for any tom dick or harry to stroll in expect to be allowed to enter, a guest green fee is not a temp membership it is payment to use the facility of the course for a round of golf.

what can happen when your home course is being used for a [ official golf union open county competition], you can apply for the courtesy of any course that is involved in that comp., and IF a big if, they give you a time. you can play ,but not win their internal club comp. but off medal tees and if a member marks your card , you can return it with the css , to your own h.c sec. as a supp. card . p.s if your good enough you should be playing in your g.u.area open comps

You have to be a member to play in our comp except, of coorse, the club opens. Todays comp is a gold letter comp and there will be around 100 entries so there wouldn't be any room for non members, also, the course is closed until 11.30 for the comp

One previous club allowed it - if there was room.

Others haven't, though OK if member and another club is 'Home' club.
