To recognise who the public think has been the best Sportsman throughout the year

As with every single other sports giving out a Player of the Year.

Technically, it's who the public think is the sportsperson of the year out of the ten people they are told they can vote for.

Yes a short list from 30-40 sport journos

Again there isn't many times it has been badly wrong

 Arsenal Wenger , team of the year Arsenal .............job done .........EYG :D:D:D:D :lol::lol::lol:

I'm glad that Taylor hasn't ever won - Darts appears to be an excuse to just get smashed whilst two people play a pub game

Darts players are some of the most dedicated professionals in sport.

Despite being at the top of his game for decades, Phil is still getting better and better, simoly because he is constantly practising, sometimes 6hrs a day, he diesnt even have a day off a Christmas.

A lot of these darts-professionals when they start out work day jobs, say in London, then drive to Yorkshire that night for a game before driving back to london, getting home at 3am then heading out back to work again at 8am, week-in, week-out.

An average professional darts player doesnt earn much of a living.

A decidedly average tour golfer still earns a fortune.

I know who I respect more.

I know it is a "pub-game" and so what if people like a beer when they are watching it?

Darts is theatre, it really is

Team of the year Crystal Pala........................ Sorry just got up and didn't read the thread properly!

I work Xmas Day also

Actors practise every day

WWF Wrestlers practise every day and provide "theatre"

Shall they include the bar billards or skittles world champ as well

Its a pub game with an atmosphere created by drunk people watching two really fat people. Never a sport IMO

Sailing is also a sport.

If this is true, then so is darts imo.
They both require great skill and dedication to reach the top.
Just because one sport is followed by a bunch of hooray numpties and the other the great unwashed doesn't mean one deserves recognition whilst the other doesn't.
I'll leave it to you to decide which is which.

Do you ever post without making a gentle reference to your 1980's style class war? I am sure communists in Russia like sailing boats too.

The reason that they don't have a day off over Christmas as you well know its the world champs 1 week after. They will have time off at the end of January. You wouldnt expect Tiger to take a week off before the Masters so its not really a valid point. I do agree however the Phil Taylor is a class above the rest.

So Andy Murray is the favourite for eventually managing to win a game against the same bloke who has been kicking his butt on a regular basis for the last 5 years  Some achievement is that

Yes it would seem Murray is going to win how predictable and fair play to him for delivering finally. I cant wait for the winning speech ...

However Mo Farrah would get my vote. OK so he's only won the world champs this year but add that to the Olympics he's easily now one of the all time greats. Oh and he's got a personality! Im looking forward to running with him in April! :)

For those who don't think sailing is a sport and Ben Ainslie isnt a contender urrrr sorry but you dont know sport.... You will struggle to find a more competitive, tougher and harder sport out there than sailing at this level. He is a legend across the globe in a variety of events and quite simply one of the best. He was instrumental in a record fight back in the Americas Cup who drafted him in because of his ability and has dominated his individual event for years at Olypmic level.

Darts ... oh please lets be real. its not really a sport is it - Pub games.....Sport is about being an athlete surely? Yes they are very committed as I am on a Friday in the pub.... and the Power is head and shoulders above the rest I agree but its not got massive coverage for a reason and come on we all throw better after a few pints! :)

It's got to be Murray who wins it after breaking the british men's wimbledon hoodoo. Must be the greatest British sporting achievement of the year.

Phil Taylor could definitely be "Pub Games Personality of the Year" unless we've got an amazing dominoes or skittles player I don't know about.

Mo Farah..... <deep sigh>..... I really liked him but since he's snubbing the commonwealth games I've gone right off him, won't be getting my vote. Not that I'll bother voting anyway......

Ben Ainslie? Sorry but if he didn't win it in an Olympic year I don't understand why he's even nominated this year.

Not bad for a fat lad.

i personally, have never "got" SPOTY, it should be renamed to sports person of the year, the use of the word personality should mean exactly that, a personality not a person..

Murray will win by a huge margin.

Possibly they are now but that has not always been the case and that is a fact. I know this from the horses mouth. If the public votes were used to select the winner, a couple of sport anglers would have won in the past. They didn't and it was fixed. Absolute FACT. 100% true.

PM me if you want to know who told me this.

if it's an Absolute FACT. 100% true fact it will be public knowledge so no need for pm's, just link to the evidence
