They could have just used a station or direction to name them, equivalent to the Victoria or Northern line. Would have remained in keeping with the rest of the map (bar the Elizabeth line) and been far more inclusive and far less divisive.

It's really not divisive. It shows the diversity of London.

Oh dear. I wasn't going to argue with you, but now I have to.
It is divisive because it is pitting two (or more) groups against each other, unwittingly or otherwise. Some will completely hate the names and tht is their right, rational or otherwise. Had they kept the concept of naming as per station or direction, then far fewer if any groups could have taken offense or been given fuel to their argument of being put upon.

And to finish, I'll quote Bob Mac, "I'm out".

Agree Simon. Very divisive naming. Been too busy to comment and now off for a sauna!

That wouldn't work. when yellow is circle, blue is pic or Vic, red is central marron is met green is District grey is jubilee

You can't have 2 lines the same solid colours the map wouldn't look right even if you did them with outline colour and not filled in because tourists would say how to I get to the green line and then it's like district or ?
The map is going to have those colours. The overground lines will be parallel lines rather than solid.
And the names are just names. Nobody calls the Central Line the Red Line.

I like that. "Watford Line" etc. Can't offend anyone.

I agree with station and directions would be simple but i can assure you people do call the central red and northern the black line etc etc , tourists in which their first language isn't English find the colours a simple way to follow the map

I see. So if the tourists need to call the Central line the red line, what are they going to call the Windrush line, seeing as it will also be red? 😋

That's the entire point the colours are different. They are red boarder with faded inside.

A clear difference.

Having worked directly with tourists on stations in the past I can assure you simple names rather than calling it colours will be far more effective.

But whatever you clearly know more than me. All your years of experience 😂👍

Spending about a sixth of one year's advertising revenue as a one off cost to bring every item of signage up to date in 300 stations doesn't seem like that big a deal to me.
Feels like some people are letting their panties get bunched irrationally.

Costs always sound more from the outside, we see millions thrown about and in reality it's small fry.

I do however concede that if the lioness line had been named the 1966 line there would be a lot less complaints.

A few posts back you said that people (especially foreign tourists) call the lines by their colours. Now you appear to be saying that they use the names. Which is it?

Of course you know more about it than me. All I'm asking is for clarification.
Do tourists use the names or colours?

Use both. However it's easy to say colours. The colours will be different they won't be the same

What you have suggested to name them the "red" line whilst colouring them how they have (red outter line with faded middle) is just confusing

Excuse me where's the red line? Do you mean solid or faded red.

Clear names are always better and the colours make it easier to follow on the map itself.

Colours aren’t great for colour blind people either!
