Sore throat for about a week - like razor blade sore. Chest felt grotty for a few days but seems to be improving. Due to fly to the U.K. tomorrow… all tests passed but we’ll see how it is in the morning…

Went for an early evening drink with the missus. The pub has two rooms of equal size. The first room is jam packed. The second room is a quarter full with people eating. I ask the guy behind the bar if its OK to take our drinks through there? "Sorry sir, you can only go in there if you have booked a table to eat".

Totally daft as its no more formal than the first room. Folk were coming in and walking straight back out because they couldn't get a seat, yet there are about 15 empty tables in the second room. It's a really nice bar, but that's poor business sense imo.

Had a stinking cold now for a fortnight. Just can’t shift it. I have done a couple of Covid tests during that time as I have had hospital appointments - both negative. The nurse at the hospital said there are some vicious colds now circulating because the general population has lost so much immunity during the pandemic.

On news and current affairs programmes over the last week, the word "unprecedented" has been used an unprecedented number of times.

It has irritated me more than before.
Extraordinary…being used in a specific context this week past, when the very significant event being so described was many things but extraordinary it just didn’t seem to be. No matter. It was also not really unprecedented…

Getting charged £6.10 for a bottle of Lucky Saint alcohol free beer in a pub/hotel beside Chatsworth, Derbyshire.

Though have to say - thing to gladden the heart is that we were having a meal and drink in a beautiful little hotel by Chatsworth the evening after we had a lovely meal in a restaurant in Borough Market, London. So fortunate to be able to do that.

We’re flying into the U.K. for a visit around our kids/relatives. Been pricing up train journeys. Jeez, crazy prices

Though they can be good if you get it right. My 1hr each way off peak return with senior railcard into Waterloo yesterday was £15.👍

Someone's got to fund the train drivers' salaries.

Just hire a car. Not that that's cheap.
Can't think of anything that's cheap anymore in the UK, except for junk food.

Without getting too political, train drivers wages are not the main cause of high ticket prices
Yep, I know it's not just the drivers being paid too much, but it was an easy jibe.
(I was deeply involved with the Sentinel system and am aware of just how much more trackside workers earned than guys doing similar jobs elsewhere)

Hiring a car isn’t cheap for someone with a Spanish driving licence, and a number of companies won’t accept it.

Definitely worth getting senior cards or 2 together or some such. More than a couple of journeys and you're ahead.
Book ahead, travel off-peak etc.
Spain is particularly cheap for public transport cf the UK. Its a choice...
