Is your club your local club?

Nope. Journey time is just under an hour on the motorway about 49 miles away. Joined it because a few of us wanted to join a club together and this was relatively central to all of us. God knows how many courses I could potentially join in between.

It's not even that great a course, just cheap and convenient. We are now all considering going our own separate ways as we rarely play together these days as we are in drawn medals, although the winter pairs / teams comps are fun playing together.

My local Club is only 5 mins down the road, There isn't anything any nearer and I have been a member there since I was a junior. Its a short course and its only a 9 holer but its kept well and the members are a good bunch of lads. There is a couple of 18 holers in the local vicinity with better courses but it works where i am and i cant afford to change!

Nairn is about 20 miles away, from where i live in Inverness. There is a local course i could walk to the first tee in Under 5 mins.

no contest...... Championship Links Vs short parkland.

No, I play at a club 20 mins drive from home, there is a course 5 mins away.

but it's only 18 holes (we have 36)
the practice facilities are rubbish (ours are brilliant)
its like a bog and closes for months every winter (we're on chalk and always open)
there's only 1 qualifier a month (we have minimum 9 per month)

Mine is second nearest - and the nearest 18 hole. 4.5miles through south london and 10 mins by motorbike. No disrespect to most 9 holers but the nearest is a 9 holer barely worthy of the title of "golf course".

If that's Shortlands it's harsh, however if it's Royal Magpie you may well have a point……...

My nearest is Downshire a pay and play with two clubs attached (Downshire and Easthampstead). Decent course if very wet and boggy in winter but I'd have to book every time I wanted a game and it is very slow at weekends. I've got Mill Ride about fifteen minutes away, that I keep looking at. I also have the Berkshire the same time away but out of my price range. Similarly with Swinley Forest. Sand Martins the same distance the other way but all in all I'm happy with my club even though it's 20 minutes away and the furthest of the lost. Definitely spoilt for choice around here but home is where the heart lies

Amazing that someone drives you past all those courses to play on what really is not even fit to ride horses on.....

I have the same dilemma every year, about renewing my membership, my club is the nearest club to me (about 5 mins away) unfortunately it's only a nine hole course and there are a couple of 18 hole courses within about 15-20 mins drive away.
What I am wondering is how many of you are members at a club that is not your nearest?

I had same dilemma for years, was at Wishaw 2-3mins drive and finally moved to Lanark 25-35mins drive 3 seasons ago. Best move I ever made, I admit I miss nipping up for 7 holes late night mid summer but everything else makes it worth it.
