Hi all,

I am current student at Leeds living in headingley and looking to join a gold club. I know Leeds are spoilt with amazing golf clubs with the likes of alwoodley and moortown! However I am looking for a good club that will be around £400 for the year. I had a look and nailed it down to either sand moor or Headingley which are around a 15 minute drive away from my house. I just wondered if anyone had any experience playing these courses? If so, I would love to hear all about them as well as what one is maybe better in terms of playability in winter, conditions of greens/fairways, variety in holes!

MAany thanks!!

Two very good Clubs & both offering pretty good winter golf though, from what I've seen, Sandmoor becomes a greatly shortened course. For me, Headingley is Leeds 3rd best course behind Alwoodley & Moortown as Sandmoor has several 'quirky' holes & blind shots. I'd agree that you need to visit both to see which you are comfortable with. Good luck

I’m not from Leeds ( south Manchester) but we went on our annual lads golf trip to both these clubs last May .. First we played Headingley and we all enjoyed it , especially the back 9 . The Pro did boast he thinks the back 9 is the best back 9 in Yorkshire .
Next day we played Sandmoor and from the 1st putt on the practgreen we were all in awe . We had a lovely sunny day which helps but for me Sandmoor is the best course I’ve played in England ( not played that many ) . Everyone was extremely friendly from course manager , greenkeepers to Lady Captain. Sandmoor gets my vote

To the OP. Only you can decide as favourite golf courses are always subjective. I have played so called top courses and have wondered what all the hype was about.

You need to find out which one thinks drinking games are acceptable after a round and join that one. Depth charge was my personal favourite.. 🤣

Seriously though, question what you are looking for in the course, clubhouse, membership, access to comps etc, and base your decision on those factors. Visitors to courses get a very different experience to members.

I have played sand moor and did enjoy it! However, holes 2-4 were closed and like you say there are quite a few blind shots etc. It is interesting to note that you prefer Headingley over sandmoor!

Thanks for the comment! I have played sand moor once and like you say I was in awe of the greens and fairways considering it was late October the course was playing well!! However, if headingley vcan match that it might be getting my vote..

Okay, I'm jumping in: blind shots tend to be an issue mainly if you have no local knowledge. After you get to know a course, in my experience blind shots can be quite thrilling. So, whilst not ideal for the touring groups, they shouldn't dissuade you if you are becoming a member. Once again: just my opionion.

Hiya, I guess I never really thought of it like this but that is true!! Once you know the course you can pick your line and send it!

Headingley would get my vote.

Highlights for me include:

Approach shot on 1st is a real test of nerve so early in the round.
2 of the par 5's offer good birdie chances
The three par 3's on the back nine are all fantastic holes (especially 17th)
The drive on 18th

Only downside is crossing the road after the 3rd and crossing back after 11th. The traffic can be fast moving at times!

Wow what a choice for £400!. Both fantastic courses and both bring different things. I really like Sandmoor and only played Headingley once, in late February and it was still immaculate. Sandmoor is a beautiful course, awesome greens and very welcoming. Both feel like proper golf courses. It could come down to the 2nd at Sandmoor being a bit meh, the distance to both clubs, something you don't like in the clubhouse etc. Nice problem to have

I know, what a problem to have haha! I am now edging towards Headingley as I can get a 6day membership there for £280!! instead of sandmoors 420£
