Do I join sandmoor or Headingley golf club?

I know, what a problem to have haha! I am now edging towards Headingley as I can get a 6day membership there for £280!! instead of sandmoors 420£
Even if you play lass than 10 times that's still cheaper than visitors rate. I'd be snapping their hands off at that price. It really is an amazing course.

Yes I'd say that's Sandmoor, always charging quite a bit more. Their Opens, for years, have been at £40 a man when Scarcroft, Headingley & Wetherby were still at £25/£30...... Alwoodley & Moortown are at another level. However, Sandmoor always seems to manage to punch above its weight with its reputation.... not sure where that comes from.
Don't get me wrong it is always very well presented which makes it a pleasure to visit & has a very convenient practice area. However, I find there are just too many weak holes & blind drives... yes you can get used to them but it still takes away from the experience. They boast that their 4 Par 3's are the toughest in the county & it's true that if you miss the green you'll have all on getting up & down or even just bogying. Happy to play a couple of those Par 3 toughies but all 4 is just rather too demanding.
Headingley is a full-on Championship type course. In my latter years I find it a rather tough walk as there's lots of undulations & sloping fairways. It has one really tough Par 3, 17th with the remainder being a fair challenge.
From what I've seen they have Clubhouse areas that are rather more 'Boisterous' than would be tolerated at Sandmoor & perhaps other N Leeds Clubs.
Here in N Leeds we are spoilt rotten with fine courses & get to play them all with the Union for just £21 or so.
Whatever you choose you'll be getting a memorable experience at a good price.... Good luck

Thanks for all the help!! I am leaning towards headingley now due to the reduced cost and people saying it's on par and others even preferring it!! The fact that it is currently open and still playable in these conditions is crazy!! I just wondered if you knew if it had any practice facilities for members? If not no worries I am in contact with the pro currently.

I plan to play in the YUGC events at both courses this year - I hope we can meet up again.

Over recent years they've been making significant improvements to these due to receiving many £10's of thousands from 'spoil dumping' which I'd think must be close to completion & should provide quite outstanding facilities though I haven't seen them. Horsforth GC benefited from the same & created a superb facility so I'm sure will have done also. I'll be checking that out this coming year.

The short game area is now finished and looks a fantastic facility. Right next to the clubhouse running parallel to the 18th.

The practice ground is not finished and has ongoing work and is not currently in use.

So you are going with price? I've only skim read this, but Sandmoor sound the place to be. You can't beat amazing greens and friendly members. That's why I chose my first proper course.

thanks for the reply! What's the difference between the practice ground and short game area? thanks.

Well for £140 less being a student is a big difference plus both courses seem to be on par with things such as greens/fairways? Have you played both as an insight/comparison would be great! Thanks.

At a time when you're (supposed to be) studying, and money can be tight, on a decision that has split the forum, I think price is a perfectly good way of doing it. Use the saved cash to play Sandmoor occasionally.

Haha exactly that's what I am thinking!! the only con is the month it takes to go through the application process!

Problem with that is you'd only be able to play Sandmoor 3 times with saved money 🤣

The short game area has practice bunkers and target greens. I would reckon it is c. 120y long - so really for wedge practise. Not sure if it has a putting green
but there is a small putting area on the way to the 1st tee. Located right by the clubhouse.

The practice ground is huge and located away from the main facilities. I think you would probably have to drive to it.

Located behind the 10th tee and the halfway house. Being levelled and re-seeded but not yet finished. Should have plenty of room to hit driver once completed.
