Surrey golf club membership

Did I suggest increasing subs 'just because'? And did I suggest that a not for profit club has an objective to make a profit? I had a few beers last night so both genuine questions.

Absolutely! It has to make "some profit" to be able to reinvest in the club, (e.g. replace machinery, course enhancements) and add to/maintain reserves.

That’s not really a profit, as you are creating a provision for future expected requirements. Let’s call it prudently building a surplus for a rainy day 😊

In other news, water is wet.

Ok, you were suggesting that a premium club could significantly increases its fees (because it can). What would be the objective of that? What would they do with the extra revenue? Because it’s fair to say they are already maintaining a beautifully conditioned course and clubhouse, and they don’t need to spend more money than they do already.

I'm sure Phil Worthington would give you a comprehensive answer to that question if you e-mailed him

Where I used to live you had

Fulwell in Twickenham, always in cracking condition, around £2k joining fee and £2k subs

Royal Mid Surrey in Richmond not sure how hard it is to become a member. 36 holes. Some famous members I believe. Beautiful location right next to Kew Gardens.

I think subs are around £3k not sure of joining fee. Probably similar, I think you have to buy shares in the club.

Ashford Manor, not played there, mature course doesn't look very interesting design but nice condition. I think around £1600

Hampton Court, Kingston. Inland links. Some very good holes, amazing views when playing the 6th up towards the palace. Friendly club. Beautiful surroundings in home park with the deer. Around £2k I think with no joining fee last time I looked.

All depends on budget I guess but all top 100’s in Surrey are on waiting lists, many well over 2 years now.

I’m in woking so not far away, have you looked at East Berkshire? Not long but a cracking course and they’re intent on making improvements. 3 W’s will be between £4.5k -£9k joining fee and £3k subs, Camberley Heath is also decent but also in that range.

I went to Hindhead, fees are much more sensible but there’s a long waiting list there too now. Not many “affordable” options round this way unfortunately.

East berks is circa 18m to 2y waiting list. Joining fee 1x subs ) £2235

Some great insights here. @Shooter McPowick / others - I have recently moved from Greenwich to Wimbledon Park. Until this season, I was a member at Sundridge Park GC (great 2x18 hole course in Bromley) and Westerham in Kent prior to that.

Now based in SW19, I'm looking for a club that's within 30 min drive, and wondered if folks have a view on Coombe Hill GC, Malden GC or Roehampton GC? They are all within 15 min drive. Would Royal Mid-Surrey or Cuddington (both ~30 min drive) be also worth a look? I'm looking for a club for the next 10+ years, where I can get into regular comps, ideally with practice facilities. Had a look at Royal Wimbledon, but don't know any current members there, so have not played there yet (they ask for Hcp of <8.0 to be added to a 'regular' list vs. me playing of ~16.0 right now - albeit looking to grind it down to 12.0 this season!).

Any insights / suggestions much appreciated (top ones = a beer locally).

@Dominik - you can get a tram straight to addington palace from Wimbledon (swap at east Croydon) the stop is about 100yds from the entrance to the club house.

Nice if you fancy a few shandy’s after golf as no driving 🍻

Wimbledon Common for me all day long. Fantastic club, very warm atmosphere and a very testing course.
