Is your club your local club?

20 minute drive for me from home.

There are two clubs maybe 5 minutes away by car, one of which I wouldn't consider joining, the other Id join in a flash if I could justify membership at 2 clubs.

The advantage my place has in terms of location is that its only 5 minutes detour from my commute home which makes it perfect to stop off for an evening 18 after work.

probably the joint closest to me - circa 3 miles driving and 2 miles walking through the woods. Downshire, Blue Mountain, Billingbear and Sandmartins must be about the same distance, with east Beks a mile further

This is a problem I have. Nearest is west lancs prob 10 mins away. But its a links and expensive and tough I believe. 3 things I'm not fond of.
Then it's 20mins minimum, and a motorway or queens drive for the parklands in the city. 3 more things not fond of either.

Twixxed inbetween

I have the same dilemma every year, about renewing my membership, my club is the nearest club to me (about 5 mins away) unfortunately it's only a nine hole course and there are a couple of 18 hole courses within about 15-20 mins drive away.
What I am wondering is how many of you are members at a club that is not your nearest?

It's all about a trade off. If I were you I would really consider the options. I have just left my (reasonably) local club for one further away and more expensive. For me the benefits are huge in terms of the course. It's not that much further from work so getting to the course on summer nights is easy enough. Have to cross town from my house but that will be on weekends when I am in no rush.

If however it will cause you to play less I would be staying put.

I drive past 3 golf clubs to reach mine, 25 minutes away. There are 7 that are closer to me.
No-one of them come close to the quality of Westerham.

That is a pretty bullish claim. There are some decent courses in that area imo. I do like Westerham though, apart from the little par 3 straight up the hill. We played it earlier in the year and the greens were not brilliant, but I guess it was just s bad time to play it.

John OGaunt is 20-25 mins from me depending on traffic, 15 from work. Mount Pleasant, a 9 hole course, soon to be 18, is just across the fields or 5mins in the car. Letchworth is 15-20 mins away. Beadlow about the same. But none of them comes close to JOG for facilities and more importantly the golf courses.

Possibly the only club that would be better is Sundridge Park. I haven't played Knole Park, but although it looks lovely, too many members of the public to get in the way for my liking.
Lullingstone, Chelsfield Lakes, Birchwood, Broke Hill, Darenth Valley, Redlibbets, Pedham Place, Cherry Lodge and Nizels aren't as good overall in my opinion.
What's not to like with the 8th hole?
Greens have been great for most of the year, although they aren't ever fast if that's what you like.

Only 1 that's closer to me than my club but still only a 5 minute drive to mine and is a far better course and club overall, IMO, than the closest option.

Royal Lytham's about another minute from my club but not sure I'm welcome there!!

The 6th tee is literally at the bottom of my garden, and I can hit a gap wedge from my garden onto the 5th green! Can drive to the course in under a minute and be on the 1st tee in around 5 if I cut across the course from the back.

Mine is the second nearest to my home by about 400 yards, and is about 3 miles away by road. Journey takes about 7 minutes normally, but can take up to 45 minutes in the morning rush hour. The nearest course is a rather short 18 hole pay and play.

It would only take you 3 minutes in Scotland! ;)

Course I've just joined is 2 mile away. That's main reason for joining when missus goes back to work (end of her maternity) that's only way I would be able to get few holes in during the week

Sundridge, Knole and Tandridge???
And although Limpsfield Chart is "only" a 9 holer, it's just down the road and a lovely place to play golf Simon.

Mine is second nearest - and the nearest 18 hole. 4.5miles through south london and 10 mins by motorbike. No disrespect to most 9 holers but the nearest is a 9 holer barely worthy of the title of "golf course".

Nearest to me is a medium par 5 away as the crow flies and about 3 mins in the car.
But its a flat, boring course with crossover holes ( which I hate ) and has a vastly over inflated opinion of itself - the sign outside welcomes you to "The *************** Golf Club" as if there would be more than one in a tiny Buckinghamshire village....
A couple of others that are maybe a tad closer but a bit too high in price for me and one of them you need to be a mountain goat to play.
My club is about 15 minutes away but is handily placed on the edge of town, so I can finish work and be there in minutes or vice versa.
Not the best course and it might not be around for much longer but it serves its purpose.

My coursed used tone about 1km in a straight line to the 2nd green, 2 miles to the gates or 3 miles to the club house, used to take about 7-8 mins tops.

We moved last year and it's now around a 15 minute drive, I past 3 clubs in route and have 4-5 clubs all a lot closure. Due to not being able to drive until August 2016(health related) I did consider moving clubs to one of the nearer ones which are about 1km from my new place but I'd miss the guys at the club to much and no doubt end up back there as soon as I get the all clear so a 6-8 month move seems pointless.

2/3 of the guys pick me up every Sunday so I can still play and to me its guestures like this which confirm I'm at the right place, winter golf in wet conditions can be brutal though

2 mins by car for me, the closest course to me. They knocked me back 15 years ago when they had a 10 year waiting list, just had to wait 3 months this year to be accepted, how times change. Will be getting my money's worth when next season starts for sure.
