We have a great bunch who play regularly on Saturday mornings, always the same format on none comp weekends. Fiver in, pound on the front 6, pound on the middle, pound on the back, with two pounds for the overall. Means you always have a pot to shoot for, even if you start poorly.

Last Saturday we had 12 of us start out, so £60 in the pot. When the rain came, 8 people abandoned, leaving the front fourball out there who finished, went back to clubhouse and ante'd up. Of those who abandoned, attitudes have ranged from "saved myself a fiver there" to "who do I owe my money to?"

What would you do?

Definitely pay up. Once the stakes are agreed it is not the winner's fault if others decide not to finish.

The only exception would be if all agreed to call it quits.

Sounds like a great way to fall out with friends, and all over what is a little amount of money for each person to chuck in. Especially if the terms have been agreed prior to the match.

Those that walked off on their own accord should cough up, unless all agree to walk off of course.

Personally I don't like playing for money. I've seen a few guys at the club divi-ing up the money at the end of a round, and the look on their faces looks like they're doing some sort of serious business deal.

I know some play for money habituly (sp), but it's not for me I'm afraid.

Anyway. The wife would kill me if I did!!

I can't understand why they would think they didn't have to pay up. If you were having a stinker on the 1st 8 holes and decided to walk in, I'm pretty sure they would want your fiver ! Tight Gits !

I agree they should cough up the dosh, up to them they walked off the game had started.

We do a simalar thing but every one puts in 2 golf balls, as some dont like playing for cash it suits all, and ball in the bag before the 1st ball is hit and no refunds

I think it's vague enough to cause problems. Personally, I'd pay up.

But in this situation, I'd void the comp and set some rules out to cover this eventuality in the future. Otherwise, people are going to start falling out and its not worth it.

if they wont pay up an the next time out and i was having a stinker id just tear your card up on the 17th and walk in see what they say then

Pleased to say all resolved with no tears last weekend, money stumped up all round and expectations set for future weather mishaps.

For the record I was one of the ones who soldiered to 18, and the only one of the 4 not in a winning position by then!
