The new Top 100 Course in UK & Ireland

I think in hindsight I would like to go back and play again but in different company as I might alter my view then.

Interesting point, I wonder how many of the strong views made in this thread have been influenced by the quality of play by that individual on the day?

I know that I was awful at Hillside & Beau Desert but still thought they were excellent.

Ballybunion higher than Tralee?? Are you mad?

Look, I mostly play cheap goat tracks and crazy golf courses as I am pretty awful at golf, and in fact I have never even been to Ireland. But I am professionally upset by a lot of things. And this list is a disgrace.

Sorry but I don't see how you can comment on these two courses if you haven't been to Ireland and played them both?

Not sure if your reply was an even poorer attempt at irony than my original one was. If so then fair enough. If not then I was being ironic and slightly sending up people who get very upset over trivial things like a top 100 list of golf courses.

Rosapenna in at 42 way ahead of ballyliffin  wonder who makes up the judging panel

Read on, Chris, and you'll find out exactly who makes up the panel...

Loving the debate - nobody is ever going to agree with a list like this but it's interesting and I'm enjoying the related features in the mag.

Seems like a lack of panellists assessing the courses from the ladies tees...... could maybe help out next time if you like.....

it's not really irony just sarcasm :ears: I'm an expert in the latter !

either way I appreciate what you are saying, it does seem over the top to argue the toss so vehemently . However if you ventured away from your usual course & spent £160 on a round at the Belfry and found it wasn't up to expectations. You may be a little annoyed :o

True, but I would one more annoyed with myself for paying that kind of cash on one round of golf. I did laugh when I saw that Skibo was offering a 4 ball for £1200. I'm sorry but of you pay that much for a round of golf then you deserve what you get.

Have I got to go and count them up as well...?

Ok
Back in a minute

That didn't take long

5 of the first 100 and 5 of the 2nd 100

Not exactly a good score is it......:mmm:

sweeeet jasus...............maybe that is really irony. £1200 quid for a 4 ball in Scotland, where golf is the peoples game:o

edit - it does look nice tho

Always nice to see a lively debate :ears:
  • One thing I will say is that it is very subjective and it is easy to see how people would prefer several courses near the botom of the top 200 than in the top 50. There is not too much difference in standard, quality and enjoyment between, for example, the botom end (in ranking terms) of the Surrey/Berks/Hants Heathland and the top, and the majority of links courses - It is certainly not 5 times the quality, like the green fee indicates. Let me chuck a question in here - is Blackmoor worse than Wentworth West overall?? Even if you say yes, I can't see how you could say by very much.
  • Totally agree with the comments on Hankley over Walton Heath
  • Some top courses get a fair amount of negative as well as positive comments - not least Muirfield and Lytham (not played it but can't see how it makes no.7), whereas others such as RCD and Dornock and, usually, Turnberry, are nearly always praised as the dogs nads.
  • I would give the nod to Sunningdale New over the Old although I only played 11 on the new! Although it is close, but the stretch of holes on New beteen 4 and 11 may be the best run of 7 holes anywhere? As nice as the Old is, the par 3s (apart from 4) are not the best and nowhere near as good as Swinley, for example. Fantastic courses though and as a day out, it must be just about the best in the country
  • Not played the Belfry but still can't see how it is Top 100 - ahead of Beau Desert and Broadstone, for example, that are in the Next 100 but should be in the main list - and better than Bearwood, West Hill etc in the main list?
  • Ladybank is nice but possibly should be top end of Next 100 not at 84
I have an ambition to play all courses that have ever appeared in the top 200 - ie probably nearer 300. This may take a lifetime!

Just added up how many I have played on this list:
  • Next 100 - 21. Two courses that deserve to be in here are Camberley Heath and Kings Lynn
  • Top 100 - 33
  • Top 100 in England and Wales Not Played - 25 - hopefully will knock a few of these off over the coming year or two, starting with Royal North Devon next month

You could take 100 forummers and ask them all for their top 100 and I bet there would be very few courses that make all the lists and there will almost certainly be a different top 10 on every one. It is such a difficult thing to categorise and I understand the way GM do it (and other mags and online sites) and to be honest it seems as good a way as any.

It makes fascinating reading even if a few comments towards Jezz and GM were perhaps a tad OTT. I've not played nearly enough of the top 100 to be totally objective and played a shameful number of Scottish courses so don't feel qualified to make any assumptions on which are better than others.

However it is a great feature, and having spoken to Mike on a couple of occasions is something he looks forward to each year. There isn't a right answer to the definitve top 100 (or indeed the next 100 either) but I love the way it divides opinion and everyone has their own take on the subject. The debate is almost a better read than the list

You mean you haven't played ,its a fantastic track and tough if the wind is blowing in the opposite direction that the course was design as.
The views from the club house are fantastic as was the service ,mind we were the only ones there and did par take in a few drinks, haha

Gordon or Snelly will be along in a minute to properly show off

47 on this list for me with 3 more booked up for next spring. Not seen the 2nd 100 yet so don't know about them.

Lovely track, we have a match agaist them next weekend but no chance of getting picked, unless you are on the committe.
