Rory playing for Irl in Olympics

I suspect that never has a thread been so closely watched by mods as this one. Some people debating the political situation in Northern Ireland on a chat forum on the internet. What can possibly go wrong.;)

The thought police monitor all threads to esure they comply with what they think is right...

YES.. and sadly a necessity

NOPE ,... like minded golfers trying to discuss the in's and outs of Rory and mayb GMac playing for Ireland in the Olympics rathe than team GB , thread hijacked by some with a different agenda than talking golf .. no need for politics to ever enter thread among golfers

They play for Irl or they play for GB nor even if the never play i can guarantee you one thing , end of the day they are playing for themselves no one else.. & it wont make one bit of difference in your, mine or anyone elses lives on here which they do ..

So when someone throws in a remark in this or any thread that tries to stir things its best ignored , end of ,

The dual-nationality thing is quite interesting.

Hypothetically, is it possible for a golfer to represent Ireland in 2016 but switch to GB&I in 2020? Or is your representation "set" after playing for one or the other?

I wonder if (heaven forbid) Scotland goes independent whether we could (or should) be able to retain British nationality if we wanted? Will Scottish sports people be able to choose to represent GB post-independence?

If Scotland votes for independence, then I'm certain that it would be equivalent of Southern Ireland - so no ability to represent GB.

Believe he could swap but would need to fulfill a qualifying period possibly - think its 4 years or miss the next Olympics

Unless they have a UK Passpory still and hold dual nationality

Doesn't make sense to me, has this been done before by athletes/other Olympian competitors from NI?

At London 2012 Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan both born in Belfast.

Quiet a few football players choosing to play for Republic of Ireland instead of N. Ireland at international level.

Then there is GMac. By playing for Ireland (his only choice) at the world cup of golf this forced him to opt out of the chance to play for GB&NI due to IOC rules.

Did McIlroy ever play in the Golf WC?

I thought so

So how come McIlroy had the option?

3 years period between the Olympics and last event where you represented a country. GMac played 2013 ruling him out. Shock horror he has an MBE and can't represent GB&NI ;) There was quiet a bit of critisim (mostly from non golfers) toward GMac for chosing the enter last year a putting himself out of contention for the Olympic squad. Some even suggested he should give back his MBE.

Good thing now is that McIlroy can enter the World Cup of golf now without worrying. Think he stayed away last year because it committed him and now he has had more time to make his decision.

Currently golfers only take medicines on the approved list - the ET and PGA are both subject to drug testing also.
is the list of banned drugs as strict as the Olympic one,and does every pro golfer get tested on a weekly basis or a random monthly test, cold medicine and throat lozenges are banned so to is some forms of muscle injections, how many pros would just have a swig of venos without thinking.

Very similar testing to every other sport now - random selection at events. Not sure, but I believe it's significantly less rigid, for out of competition periods - athletics guys basically have to provide a diary that they daren't vary! - and it's not all cold medicine and throat lozenges that are banned. The GB Skier that failed a test as a consequence of nasal spray (I think) used the same brand as normal, but it was a different recipe - as purchased in a different country!
