Rory playing for Irl in Olympics

It's still a while off, might've been better to wait and see if either country actually wanted him? ;)

They won't have a choice. It is all down to rankings.

Qualification will be based on world ranking as of July 11, 2016, with a total of 60 players qualifying in each of the men's and women's events. The top 15 players of each gender will qualify, with a limit of four golfers per country that can qualify this way. The remaining 45 spots will go the highest-ranked players from countries that do not already have two golfers qualified

Basically, the reason people from NI have a choice in whether they have British or Irish passports is because the IRA bombed, shot and starved there way to political power and to appease the terrorists, the BritishGovernment decided to power share with them. Now we have a convicted terrorist as the second most powerful man in the country, what a place I live in!
Interesting take because Fred Daly played for Ireland in 1954 - a fair bit before the troubles as did many other Northern ireland golfers

Who cares. This now opens the door for the cream of English, Scottish and Welsh golfers that would have been left out due to the likes of McIIroy. Anyone who lets sectarian notions take hold can quiet frankly piss off. We have seen enough of it.

It will allow GB & Ireland to field teams which show just how strong golf is in this tiny little part of the world.

To be honest though it's ridiculous that golf is even in the Olympics.

Well, that's one view............... and probably a perfect illustration of the problems.... but let's not go there eh? It's a golf forum and if Rory wants to play for IRL and he's allowed to do so then I for one don't have a problem with it.

Exactly - all about the money - I hope Olympics isn't going down the same road as FIFA etc

I am hoping that I am not the only ulsterman that really doesnt care about who he plays under?
All across social media , here included, people have mentioned religion. This has absolutely nothing to do with region but some people still either ignorantly or other decide to spout about it. Might sound like a rant but us normal folk in NI just want to get on with our daily lives without people constantly bleating on about religion and it affects us moving away from the pathetic past. Casting this as 'newsworthy' is utter nonsense and I wish the media would wise up. They should head down to the local schools and hospitals and report on shortages if they want to do something worthwhile.

Do we know what the format for the Olympics golf will be?

I would love to see a variety of medals being won: Individual, 4BBB, Foursomes, Mixed etc

Just the two comps

Ladies and gents singles over 72 holes

It's ridiculous that he even gets to play. He is a professional golfer making a living (and a very good one at that). The olympics should be for amateurs.

100% agree with this. Disappointing to see idiots on twitter having a go at him for choosing Ireland but not in the least bit surprising. He would have got abuse no matter what he decided and no doubt much of these idiots have absolutely no interest in golf.

I've only been a member of Holywood for a few years but I've met quite a few people who know Rory fairly well. From what I've heard about him, I would be fully confident saying his decision has nothing to do with religion or politics. More likely because he has represented Ireland in the past and the Golfing Union of Ireland represents the whole island.

I'm another one who thinks golf shouldn't be part of the Olympics anyway.

It stopped being for amateurs a long long time ago

I hoped, when I first heard it was to be included in the Olympics, that it would be for the elite amateur players and not the Professionals.

McIlroy is entitled to play for either the GB Team or Ireland, since he grew up playing under the GUI and represented Ireland internationally (where there were no issues, he even played alongside GMAC) then it only makes sense for him to play under Ireland.

It was unfortunately a big decision for McIlroy to make due to the pressure put under sports stars here regarding their nationality.

McIlroy had rightly in the past not leant either way regarding if he was British or Irish. Said that he felt more British due to where he grew up then on Irish TV said he was Irish. It was important for him to remain neutral in my view because it makes him more marketable. You can almost look at it in the same why as Tiger, Tiger doesn't see himself as black because he has mixed ethnicity on both sides of the family. But he was more marketable as 'black athlete' so he kept quiet on that front.

All Ireland sports teams exist in nearly every sport apart from football which is crap because if you joined the two together we might have a half decent team!
