Rory playing for Irl in Olympics

Basically, the reason people from NI have a choice in whether they have British or Irish passports is because the IRA bombed, shot and starved there way to political power and to appease the terrorists, the BritishGovernment decided to power share with them. Now we have a convicted terrorist as the second most powerful man in the country, what a place I live in!

Rubbish.

The only reason we have NI at all is that Northern Loyalists threatened Britain with fire consequences if a united Ireland was created so a gerrymandered state was created.

People in NI have had certain rights to an Irish passport ever since.

Too late for that!

The Olympics have been corrupt for a long while, FIFA could take notes from the IOC

The IOC used to be very 'questionable' shall we say when it came to awarding host cities. I think the nadir was Atlanta which was basically chosen as Coke bankrolled a lot of it and Salt Lake City for the winter Olympics. The IOC president Samaranch was their version of Blatter and was power crazy. But since he went when the IOC got exposed for being corrupt, they have cleaned up a lot and the bidding process is a lot more transparent and open, and less susceptible to bribes and brown envelopes.

I think FIFA are basically where the IOC were 10 to 15 years ago, and I imagine/hope Qatar will be their Atlanta and it gets severely reformed.

As for golf being in the Olympics then not for me I'm afraid. Strokeplay golf is a boring TV spectator sport at the best of times, so can't see how anyone will want to watch much of it anyway once you've got over the concept of some famous golfers being there.

Olympics are no longer an amateur sport so that is being naive, but as someone said a gold should be the pinnacle in someone's sporting career, and not a vanity thing for some already very well paid sportsmen. Olympic golf gold will probably be 5th or 6th at best on the list of things they most want to win for most golfers, so it should sod off and give some air time to other sports that do not get a hundredth of the air time golf gets for most of the year. Same goes for Olympic Football and Tennis.

I studied the Olympics this year for uni work and you're pretty spot on. Salt lake especially was the biggest debacle in recent sport

Great Britain is the Island of England , Scotland and Wales

UK is Great Britain and NI

McIlroy has both an Irish and UK passport so is able to represent either at the Olympics

copied from wikipedia.

"Great Britain is part of the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constituting most of its territory: most of England, Scotland and Wales are on the island of Great Britain, with their respective capital cities, London, Edinburgh and Cardiff. The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the union of the kingdoms of England (comprising modern-day England and Wales) and Scotland in 1707. Subsequently, in 1801, the Kingdom of Great Britain united with the neighbouring Kingdom of Ireland forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. When five-sixths of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922, the state was renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

Thanks Guys , i genuinely did not know that & you too Rooter missed that the first time

Firstly, what part of what I said is rubbish?
Secondly, ROI only exists because the UK allowed it to. Everyone from NI is British, nationalists in NI claiming to be Irish have as much a case as I do if I claim to be Senegalese.

He represented Ireland as an amateur, so assuming the Irish golf authorities supported him as a youngster I don't see the problem as he was always going to play for them.

I'd feel different if we competed as the UK ( I know it's just a quirk that means we compete as GB ) or if he was financially supported by a 'British' golf authority as a youngster though.

Once again that's bull. Ireland is still Ireland North or south of the border. England invaded the country and were prepared to give it back but unionists objected. That's it

ROI only exists because the UK allowed it to.

In the same way as huge parts of all continents were allowed to become what they are now - and that is accepted by all.

I suspected straight away that the mods would have to step in at some stage.

Trending on Twitter ath the moment that he has announced it today

Must admit i didnt mind which he chose but was surprised it was Ireland ..

Will GMac follow suit ?

Back co to the OP, I think he probably will. The Irish golf union covers both Ireland and NI so to me it would make sense for him to do that.
I'm also looking forward to seeing golf at the Olympics as it will make it a little more interesting to me!

I didn't know you were Senegalese. Na ga def?

You can think what you like, but I have an Irish passport and Rory is entitled to one too.

how will golfers get round the Olympics drug testing,i bet a majority have to take some form of medicine for aches and pains or anti inflammatory drugs for bad back elbows etc,the banned list covers most things even a lemsip is banned, how will they do the weekly drug test or is it just a gimmick and will be brushed under the carpet.

Currently golfers only take medicines on the approved list - the ET and PGA are both subject to drug testing also.

Being married to someone from Enniskillen I have found it best not to get involved in arguments about Ireland....

You should try reading the Good Friday Agreement.

Irrespective of Northern Ireland's constitutional status within the United Kingdom, or part of a united Ireland, the right of people in Northern Ireland "to identify themselves and be accepted as Irish or British, or both" (as well as their right to hold either or both British and Irish citizenship) was recognised. The two Governments also agreed, irrespective of the position of Northern Ireland:

I suspect that never has a thread been so closely watched by mods as this one. Some people debating the political situation in Northern Ireland on a chat forum on the internet. What can possibly go wrong.;)
