How do you go about making the claim?
I hit a pot hole 2weeks ago and thought I'd have to suck it up as there are so many about.
The offending pot hole has now been repaired.

You need to take a picture of the pot hole where the incident occured. Use a ruler or tape measure the depth of it.
You also need to show the damage to the tyre/wheel.
Copy of the invoice from the garage.

Submit it to your local 'FixMyStreet' website. It takes a while but they do pay out.

You might be too late if they've already fixed the pot hole where your damage occured though. However if you found another deep pot hole and used that for pictures then I'm sure no one would ever know

I would guess that "Quickly, and with half an eye on any approaching traffic" would be the correct answer for that question.

Different councils have different rules. That contrast just shows how bizzare it can be.

I believe it's like this near me. If the pothole hadn't been reported to them previously then you don't get the payout. Just shows we should all be reporting potholes when we see them. I try to remember to do so.

If it's been reported and not fixed, then they are liable.
Take them to court

Trouble is the pothole was at a T junction, so quite busy to be measuring holes etc.

There is a deep pothole near us on the motorway junction roundabout. Saw it this morning and some ‘helpful’ person has stuck a cone in it - which fits quite nicely. Cars now have to brake a swerve so not sure if it is any safer

Went on a Cat trip today, usually these are a booze cruise but this one was south of the island so a ton for the taxi or stay sober to drive each way...

I was working from home on Friday and was just about to take the dog for a walk when my missus called. She had run over a pothole and burst her tyre. As it was not too far away I said I would come over and change it as I knew she had a space saver. I popped over there and as she was out shopping with her friend I told her to get a coffee while I sorted it. I went into the car, started jacking the car up and then went to loosen the nuts before raising it fully. I could not find the adaptor to undo the locking nut. Not in the glove compartment, not in the boot, not anywhere. I rang her and said have you taken the locking nut out. "I don't know". Now I know she removed a lot of stuff from her car when it went in for a service so I had this sinking feeling. So we had to take her friend home and then drive back to our house to hunt for the adaptor. Half an hour of searching and she found it. "Why is it not in the car" says I? "Well, I wasn't sure what it was so thought I would keep it safe in the house" .
Much biting of lip and said, "OK, let's go back to the car now, but just in case we have any issues, who are you with for roadside recovery?". "I don't know she says, I get it with the insurance but I don't have the details". Further lip chewing and I suggested she rang her broker and get the details in case, and also for future emergencies. This took some time but eventually she was told it was Green Flag. So we get back to the car. I undo all the nuts, and lift the car on the jack. The wheel would not come off. It was basically fused to the hub. I tried to kick it off but didn't want to kick too hard as it was on the OEM scissor jack which was a bit wobbly.
So I say let's call Green Flag. Well, she tried ringing but the voicemail said it was faster to use the app. So we then had to install the app, register and then put in the request. It then came back to say it would be 2.5 hours to get someone there. So we sat in my car and I started to work off my phone and make work calls as I didn't want to leave her. Thankfully the assistance came after 30 minutes. He put the car on a heavy duty pneumatic jack and used his size 9 boots to free the wheel. He then changed it and handed back the locking nut. I said to her that this must now stay in the car at all times. We then managed to get back home.
In all this time, I am proud to say I did not shout, moan or even be sarcastic. I stayed calm and no argument ensued. Although I am sure she was expecting one.
If I want to take any positive from this, then it would be that if anything happens in the future, and I am not anywhere nearby, she now has the recovery app on her phone and the adaptor is back in the boot.
However, that took up all my work afternoon.
