i submitted 3 cards 7 months ago and got my 22 handicap and saturday was my 3rd competition the previous 2 were recorded and was told that saturday would qualify me for the big competition tomorrow, unfortunately i can't play tomorrow due to the actions of this player which was the whole point in playing them in the first place.

I've misunderstood then. Ignore my posts.

I would be demanding an explanation of what happened, especially from the pro.

Then you had every right to play and satisfy the club rule of playing in 3 competitions before you could enter and potentially win one. Your fellow competitors should be disciplined for their actions and the Pro should be spoken to as well

I always thought it was the case that once you got your handicap that was it, you could play in competitions straight away, that's the case at my club. I think you have to play a minimum of 3 medal rounds a year to keep it active though although I could be wrong on that.

Who gave you your card for the day? If it was the pro who subsequently told you you couldn't play I'd be having some serious words with the powers that be! Sounds like the two low handicappers would have been quite happy to let you play in another group but then looked for another excuse when the first one didn't work out. Disgusting behaviour.

TBH the club pro was as disgusted at the players behaviour as i, but wasn't very strong and let it happen, what i failed to mention is that they gave me the email of the handicap guy and i sent him the following email:

Dear Gary,
I entered the medal competition today to activate my 22 handicap in anticipation of playing in the Audi competition this coming Wednesday. The 2 players I was drawn with today were lower handicaps than I and were clearly unhappy that they were playing with a 22 handicap player and attempted to fob me off to a different group. This proved unsuccessful and they were forced to play with me. I played 2 shots on the first (both good shots and within 40 yards of theirs) when one of the players decided that he wasn't happy that I was playing in the medal ,went back to the clubhouse and had me kicked off the competition. I have played in the Wednesday and Friday competitions this week today being my third which would allow me to activate my handicap and play on Wednesday, now I am not able to play in said competition as I am unable to activate my handicap. I feel this players sportsmanship has been extremely poor and ridiculously selfish and has made me question whether I would want to continue playing golf. I am a new player and although I have only been playing 18 months I don't think I am bad enough a player to invoke this kind of response. Although the staff have been very supportive I would like to make absolutely clear that I feel this player has acted in a disgusting manner, his actions have not only made me question if I want to be a member of this club but question if want to play golf at all,for the future of the club and golf itself I feel it is important to embrace new players not treat them with the disdain with which I have been treated today.

the handicap fella met me and basically attempted to condone the actions of this player (think they are friends) firstly telling me that i hadn't paid to enter (i told him what the club captain said the day before) then said that the draw sheet had to be completed in the clubhouse not in the pro shop. (i asked him to take me in the proshop and show me where the sign was stating that i had to sign up in the club house not in the proton, he declined as there was no sign. When i refuted his explanation he turned his back and walked off mid conversation!

Please don't let the actions of a couple of idiots put you off this beautiful game. Like all walks of life there are the good guys and the bad guys and (hopefully) the former far outweigh the latter.

The club should deal with your complaint and speak to those involved regarding their behaviour...not sure they'll learn from it but at least it's something.

First of all it was disgusting the way that he/they treated you. Unfortunately you come across idiots in every walk of life not just golf so don't let it put you off.

Secondly how did the guy that do this shoot on the day? Was he anywhere near the prizes. I'm sure one of the rules experts on here would be able to tell us if you could put in a complaint to get him DQ'd from the comp on the grounds of undue delay of play or whatever the correct terminology is.

Oh and welcome to the forum.

I wouldn't be joining that club. I hope there are others nearby where they behave better towards other humans.

Potentially DQ under Rule 33-7 breach of etiquette? However it needs committee decision and from what's been said so far I wouldn't be confident of a reasonable decision being made.

Sympathise with the OP, disgusting behaviour that's totally against the spirit of the game.

TBH i am waiting to see what the committee decides, the management and staff have all been very supportive and share the same view as everyone on here, well apart from the handicap guy who was completely outrageous. Not sure what to do and where to go may even try a pay and play course, i know its not going to be up to the same mark but at least i won't be treated like a leper because i can't hit a little white ball on to a green every time i hit it.

The thing I wonder about from your description of events is if the 3 games you played to gain your handicap were just normal rounds marked for handicap rather than actual competitions.

This is the normal way of gaining your first handicap, but then another 3 competitions after that need to be played in before you're eligible to win prizes in a competition.

Whether or not you were really eligible to play in the competition, I have 2 thoughts.

1. You could still play in the comp (although not win anything) and it would count as 1 of your 3 comps.
2. The guy that got you to drive him to the pro shop is an arse and the other one too if they decided together.

Agree with every word.

Golfers are a funny breed, but 90 odd % of them are good people. Like elsewhere in life, dont let the odd nugget put you off.
