The range at my course became so much more popular after trackman arrived. It's not in the same league as golf kingdom . It's just got toptracer that's it really

However people love it. I prefer when it's dry going down the par 3 next to it as I get it free and it's less busy
Playing any course is better. A par 3 can be very good practice for distance control to a small target

Discovered yesterday a range on my way home is open until 10 so managed to get 60 balls in on my way home

Range was heaving! Good for golf. Just managed to get on the range. I mean they have 25 bays and I got the last one... 3 to a bay on average people playing top tracer.

To be fair they have always been popular as it's the best range (apart from grass) that I've ever been to. The "targets" are fake grass greens. Proper sizes with shape to them so it looks like your playing into a green. Big target for 250 yards to aim for for drivers .. auto loading balls with adjustable tee height. So since they put in top tracer it's even more popular.. proper bar and food aswell so people make a thing of it

Makes me wonder; is the increasing cost of playing on an actual course, alongside the loss of many municipal courses, starting to force us down the Japanese way, where a large proportion of golfers hardly ever step foot on a golf course but play all their golf at the range?

Whilst I agree, round our way off top of my head we have 4 cheap courses that are open to all , two of them since COVID you can bearly get on their so busy

One, my old club, used to do £16 midweek with breakfast it's now £21 with breakfast, that's over 10 years worth of inflation, they are constantly rammed

Our local P&P is totally booked at weekends as soon as booking goes live two weeks in advance

At the moment there is a year on year increase of people playing golf on a golf course - that’s both pay and play and people joining as members

A lot of clubs are making space for more members and green fees

How. There is a finite number of tees available per day given the light assuming booked tee times and a gap (say 8 minutes per tee time) and a finite number of members. Does a member run club then give green fees more preference to get more money in and risk annoying tohse that can't get a game.

Two guys next to me on the driving range. One closest to me has obviously not been playing long, and his mate the other side of him is only a little bit better but he's trying to give him all sorts of advice. I think he was relaying some stuff he'd heard in a lesson, but god knows if it was applicable to his mate as well or just screwing him up. Funny to listen to though. Then the beginner guy heard me grumbling about a high toey push and asked "were you really not happy with that??" Just explained that it was a poor strike but a 'good bad one' and he seemed satisfied. Good to get a reminder of levels sometimes and how far you have come, even if progress has been slow for a while.

One of my golf gang getting his new Ping G425's today that he was fitted for, in the sunshine at the range. Happy days. I, on the other hand, am selling lots of surplus stuff on Ebay. Should clear the shed nicely. Old driver, 5 wood, putter, irons, extra bag, trolley. Proceeds will go to the kids and to two new irons for myself. Am now fully committed to playing 8 clubs exclusively and want to have a 6 and 8 iron built to my specs!

Did you mean the 430s or did he get fitted for two year old clubs?

I like this. I like when I'm hitting them "poorly" and then I look around the range and see duffs and shanks everywhere. Even if they've never played before it makes me feel better.

It's similar to being out in a group and seeing a lower handicap than me hitting a really poor shot. Although that one is tinged with frustration as well!

Waking up this morning and finding that our summer course is back on.

This time last year, the weather was so bad that it had long been closed and wouldn't be opened until late April. Roll on 12 months, and it looked as if we were in for a repeat, as we have been on the winter course for at least 4 weeks now. But, the weather has been so good it is drained, dried and open. Happy days.

Eddie Pepperell making two birdies down the stretch to make the cut this morning.

If you've been following his travails on The Chipping Forecast Podcast, you'll know why I've mentioned it
I've tried listening to that podcast, but he's just so arrogant-sounding that I gave up.

Almost as hard a watch as Marco Penge with a 3 1/2 footer on the last to keep his job hopes alive....

This post covers a few different topics but ultimately the best place for it is here.

I played The Bedfordshire yesterday with a friend of mine, we decided to play off the black tees which unbelievably gave me a playing handicap of 14.

I was losing an 11.2 differential and was thinking that it was likely to be a small handicap rise coming up.

First hole; fairway and green in regulation and I sunk a monster putt for birdie and suddenly everything just felt great.

4 over at the turn, which should have been better in all honesty. Back nine continued in a similar fashion, had some decent birdie looks but ultimately didn't make another one, got to the last hole 7 over. Pulled my tee shot left, played a decent 2nd shot to get back into play leaving a bump and run into the pin. Annoyingly I struck it too well and it had too much spin and finished 30 foot short. Made an annoying 3 putt for a double bogey but ultimately a 9 over 79.

A differential of 6.2 and I woke up this morning as a single figure golfer!
