Played Little Aston today. Jacket and tie required in the bar and dining room after 12:30pm every day. Only place that is exempt is the casual bar.

Proper traditional golf club (y)
And if you are there for breakfast you can’t have it on the outside patio - only inside 😂

Haha. I've had this debate so many times that I don't know where I stand anymore. In the old system I agreed with you, 9.4 or lower would be single figures. Because it was always rounded up or down from that number no matter what course you were at, so you'd have to be 9.4 to receive 9 shots on the course. But in the new system, it's so fluid I don't know anymore. For example, if you got down to 10.5 at my course, you'd have a course handicap of 9 off the whites. So as that's your home course you could argue you're off single figures then? Perversely you could be off 9.0 but have a course handicap of 11 at a tough course, so you're a single handicapper who plays off 11? The waters are very muddy on this.

I would say it's worth a new thread but I think there's been one, and it may even have been me that started it.

So what you're saying is we need another WHS thread? 🫣

I'm ok with HI being the barometer, even if home club playing handicap is significantly higher. HI travels, and is what's on your WHS record. But I think you have to round it to nearest whole number. Maybe I'd feel different if I was off 9.5?

Similarly, is someone with HI of 0.9 a scratch golfer?

At my club he would be scratch off the yellows, but 2 off the whites. (PH 95% used)

But then if he plays level par and two over off those tees, he has played to 0.8 and 1.0
That would tell me that he is a 0.9 golfer and not a 0.0 golfer.

I am really looking forward to being told how I've got that wrong. Bound to happen.

I get ya, but I'm totally a single figure player 😎

10.4 HI gave me a PH in comps, off the whites, at my home course of 9.

Off 9.7 I'm still a 9 but it feels better that way 😁

Yeah when any golfer is asked 'what's your handicap' by a non golfer, they can't ever answer quoting the number to one decimal place. That'd just be tragic 🤪

Even when another golfer asks you. Only time I’m going to use the decimal is on the first tee working out CH and shots given.

Not me, if it's a non golfer who I'll never play with I'm always scratch.

A guy I know (friend of a friend) always claimed to be a good golfer. The closest comparison I can think of is Jay from the Inbetweeners.

We managed to back him into a corner where eventually he had to commit to a round at Celtic Manor. It was a great moment when 3 of us striped drives down the first fairway and then we stepped back to allow him to duff it 20 yards.

Obviously he was a complete hacker, must have shot 140, although when someone is scoring 8+ on every hole we stopped counting after a while.

Hopefully a tenner a hole beforehand was agreed.

If asked I just say my current Course Handicap off the back tees. I could make myself sound a ’better’ player by quoting my CH off the front tees, or by quoting my Playing Handicap off the front tees…but who am I kidding and who am I trying to impress….🤷‍♂️

For me it’s done off index. My index is 11, off our whites I get 8 shots but I definitely don’t consider myself to be off single figures.

I’ll try and claim it if my index goes to 9.9 though.

This gave me an idea. Off the gold tees at my club I have a CH of +1. I’m better than scratch!

I’ve achieved the dream. The fact these are the forward tees that I would never play from is irrelevant 😀

Can’t believe I got to scratch without writing a blog or documenting my progress on instagram.

Playing Woking tomorrow so decided to have a look at the course guide on their website, usually these sorts of things are pretty basic and the standard tip is to “hit the fairway and green”

However, this was much more detailed and gave a real indication of how to take in each hole depending if you are a long/medium/short hitter.
