For me from the age of about 35 it was always a 30/40 yard chip.
Up till then I always cut up a sand iron and could confidently play a wee lob shot long before Phil made them trendy. {BLW before lob wedges]
Strangely the same fault seems to have been inherited by my daughter. Cost her a couple of county Championships.

I hate the pitch shot from 40 to 50 yards.
I have four wedges in the bag.
I think about eight or nine would be just right.
It's the easiest shot in golf, unless of course you've never practiced it.

3 different grip positions (top, middle and bottom)
For each grip position, 3 different lengths of swing..
8 to 4
9 to 3
10 to 2

3 grips, 3 swings per grip = 9 yardages per wedge
4 wedges = 36 yardages
Should be enough

Weird is it not. My 6i isn’t the best club in my bag…but it’s a mile better than my 5i. No matter….plod on.
Love my 4 hybrid, love my 6 iron. Hated my 5 iron with a passion.

A couple of months ago I got my lofts and lie checked and I asked the guy to set my 5 iron to 1 upright (all other irons are 1 flat, wedges 2 flat) as I just couldn't get the face closed on the 5 iron. Since then I've hit it great.

Played in an Open yesterday and one of our group of 3 had a putting nightmare. Anything within 3ft, he twitches and jabs at. He 3 putted multiple times, a real horror show. He has never been a good putter but he has definitely got worse.

Driving back with the other player we started chatting about which shot let him down in the same way, not as severely though. His reply was wedge, 70-80yds in. He tries a full wedge, 3/4 PW, just can't get it right. We chatted about how he is going to try to aim for 100yds and out as an experiment, he hits that shot well.

For me, 130-140yds, 7 iron. It is annoyingly hit and miss, more miss than hit. It's a regular distance so I need to find a way to play it better.

So, which club is your nemesis?
Played with a guy a few weeks back. Amazing ball striker but had sadly developed the putting yips. Id never seen it up close before and I really felt for the guy. Long putts were fine but the little ones ! Omg it's was like an involuntary slash at the ball.
On a personal level I have a real bad habit of starting the downswing with my upper body , results in pull usually as the rest trys to catch up.

You hit the nail on the head.
That clock matrix is the best way to do it, I'm sure, but it requires practice.

The only practice I ever get is playing. Not good.

I understand.
A shortcut would be to find a piece of grass that's more than 50 yards long.
Stick an opened umbrella in the ground at one end and pace out/measure 50 yards.
Then take your most lofted wedge, middle of the grip with (what feels like) a half back swing.
If it doesn't reach, try the other wedges until one is just right.
Just say its your 56 deg, then you'll know how to confidently hit the 50 yard shot.
It shouldn't take much longer than 15-20 mins
Then you have a point to reference off.
If the shot is 40 yards go to the bottom of the grip, or switch to your 60
If it 60 yds, switch to your 52 deg and so on

I'd want to see the numbers of your swing path direction with at least 10-12 balls
My problem is weight transition, I struggle to commit to getting through on to my left side, I've had a bone tumour removed from my tibia 3 times (2018 - 19 & 20), I either hang back and flip the hands over resulting in a pull/hook, or I swing over the top resulting in a push/slice. It's frustrating, I've lost 50 yards of distance since before my surgeries and I'm trying to force the driver too much. I find it easier to swing within myself with my irons.

I feel your frustration.
I dislocated my left ankle years ago and have the same problems.
A nice tempo 3/4 swing is best.
Think ( Ernie Els ) just before takeaway.👍

Sounds like a great idea...thanks.

The subconscious bit is annoying - I am similar in that I ruptured my pcl in my left knee many years ago (never been repaired) and sometimes my body will stop me moving the weight onto my left side.
The swinging within yourself defo helps me

My biggest weakness (at the moment) is those small chip shots from just off the green. At best I duff them and at worst shank them into a bunker.
It’s not just a technique problem, but now a confidence one.
If possible I will use my putter.
It must cost me 5 shots per round.
I think it’s time for a lesson.

I use a hybrid for these, works perfectly. Just use a short, punchy putting stroke and the ball will pop out of the grass and start rolling towards the hole. Can't possibly duff it or shank it.
