As part of a move to computerise our club, we now have swipe cards, on which we are required to put money to pay bar bills, comp entry fees, etc. (a great idea, a cashless sytem, which you still need cash for).

There is also one terminal in reception, and apparently, from next Sunday, we will have to enter our scores after medals etc, prior to putting our card in the comp box.

I don't know at the moment whether it is scores for each hole, or just gross score. Hopefully this will become clear on the day.

If it is for each hole (needed for css) then this is ridiculous. Who is going to phaff about entering 18 scores when they have just carded a net 80. No one, so the card will end up as an N/R, and css will be effected, as only the good cards will go in.

If it is for the gross score total only, will entering it ourselves save that much time for the office?

Any one got any experience of this, (as a user, or as a h/cap secretary)? How has it worked?

You'll soon get used to it !

I was sceptical of this when we first introduced it, but nowadays its a focal point to see who scored what, and what the CSS is likely to be. It certainly saves the comp convenor a nightmare after every qualifying comp.

Some will, some won't. I can certainly see more N/Rs coming. There is also only one terminal, and since we come off the course in 3s, there will be a bit of a wait, during which time you will wander off to get a beer or a sandwich, then get home and find your card in your pocket.

I can't see this as an improvement.

murph our club has had ot for years, at least as long as ive been a member anyway. Its not a big hassle sitting in front of a numeric keypad and having someone call the individual scores on each card, it takes all of 1-2 minutes for all 4 cards to be scored and posted. It works out your nets and total. Its is a lot quicker and easier than the handicap men and is good for end of year stroke index re evaluations.
On the subject of NR's, in our club if you nr more than twice in a given period you are banned from competition for a set time also. There is really no excuse for taking 20-30 seconds for filling in the online card.

We don't appear to have a key pad, so I can only assume the screen is a touch screen, and the number pad will come up on screen.

It goes live for Sundays medal, so I am expecting mayhem.

Not sure it will be powerful enough to compute my mate Adams scores, they tend to be pretty big.

#have to agree it only takes a few moments - and we do it in pairs - one hits the number one calls it out. I personally think its great. :)

You could suggest they get hold of ibm's old Deep Blue supercomputer then! haha
Thinking back, in 1998 my old clu, they were using a numeric pad and a fairly early version of todays software using Dos 6.2. Beat that! :D

We have put in our own scores via a number pad for years. I thought it was the same at most clubs.
If for whatever reason someone doesn't enter their score the match and handicap will do it when he checks cards for being signed etc.
It becomes the norm very quickly and yes occasionally you do have to hang around as some dimwit tries and fails to work it!!
It also means changing your shoes in the carpark 'tut tut' if you are in a hurry as our computer is located in the lounge (no spikes). :o
The match and handicap secretary has the option to let players enter their scores or do it himself via clicking a box in the handicapping program.

Murph, chill out :-), we have it at our club. It takes 2-3 minutes on the touch screen and there is never a queue.

We have this system at mine. You find your name, type in 18 gross scores and let it do the rest. It's painless, takes 90 seconds and saves all sorts of trouble for admin staff.
I approve, actually.....at first it was a hassle, but we are all getting on just fine. I think you and the club will be OK.

Probably it will work fine, I am just a bit of a ludite when it comes to technology and new stuff.

I can't help feel (I know I shouldn't)that we paid people to do this in the past, and now we still pay them to do it, but do it ourselves (duplication). Bit like having a dog, but runing to the front door yourself saying woof every time the doorbell rings.

Yeh, we do it at both my clubs. In fact we have a big screen in the bar that shows the scores after each individual puts them in. It updates every couple of minutes or so, keeps the top half dozen guys at the top of the screen then runs through the rest of the order of their score.

All the cards still need to be checked.

It's a good way of checking your scores are added up correctly!!

we have had this system for about 7 years now. first it was a swipe card to sign in before you played and then to enter your score when it finished. then it chaned to an handicap list and you had to find yourself, now we are on a pin number system with touch screen, it only takes a minute to enter scores and also when we sign in before we go out it automatically prints out the card with all the competition details on.

Calm Murph!

Was on the committee that installed Club 2000 at our place and we got a load of the same from the members. There have been glitches along the way as the software is not bug free (whatever the supplier says) but it was soon accepted that this was quicker and easier in the long run.

All the winning cards are still checked by hand btw!!

As for the bar card system,I assume you get a discount for paying by card. It is a good way for the club to have a ploat of money in the bank as nobody ever lets their account get to zero. Sneaky huh?

That is exactly what happens at my club, I think it is quite a good idea though to be honest.

As for the touch screen score entries if you fill it in straight after a round you will never have to queue as by the time you get there the group in front will have finished and the same will be the case for the group behind you. It will take some getting used to I am sure, but having only been a club member for 6 months it is all I have ever done. Mind you the system has been in place for years. Don't worry about it anyway, it will be fine.

The club 2000 system is pretty good and used by lots of clubs. Swiping and entering scores is easy. As others have said, our club comes down like a ton of bricks on anyone who enters a comp and then doesn't enter a score.

The card doubling as a debit card for the bar is vg. Our club gives you 10% off for all purchases made using your card.

I can understand concerns about this system going in and being used for the first time but the forum experiences all seem pretty good.

Murph its simple as as all you have used it have stated.

Just log in enter the gross score on the hole and the system works out the net score for the medal and the points for the stapleford competition.
