Cooden Beach is just under £1,500.00 a year for full membership.
As much as I love the course, I am having real difficulty in justifying my membership there.
I'm just not playing enough, due to working every Saturday and every other Sunday, on a pro rata basis it's costing me a bloody fortune.
Days of chasing a handicap are over and my main reason for staying is to keep my handicap active so that I can play in open competitions, but the more midweek opens I play in, the less I play at Cooden!!
I should jack it in, but I'll miss the course...
Is there not a dirt cheap course nearby? One you never need to play, but keeps your handicap alive.

Just noticed on our club home page.....fees will be the same as last year. £1200 up front, or £700 plus £5 for each play. No increase at all.

£1376 annual subs for our course in West Sussex.

But I'm between 30-35 so I pay £846.

It's a pretty good deal for the Spring/Summer as the course plays beautifully and I live 5 minutes away so can stroll over for 9 whenever. But the drainage is appalling and in the winter we are regularly closed for weeks at a time. Then they open the course but temp mats and greens on the vast majority of holes.

We played two weekends ago and 17 holes had temp greens and 15 holes had temp tees. Our 530 yard Par 5 18th was playing about 280 yards.

There isn't much else in the local area. Tilgate Forest is basically a public driving range with course and affectionately known as Tilgusta as it's so difficult and we've seen recent closures too.

Can you transfer from full fees to to the £700 plus £5 per time? Surely most would jump to that wouldn't they, great deal? How many people are likely to play more than 100 times in the year?

@Imurg I should have seen that coming :D. I would guess at most clubs it is less than 10% of members in that category, probably 5% really. @banjofred club seems to have gone too generous imo, or they rely on people not working it out?

When I joined last year I just paid the full whack up front. I am NOT in the majority, or even close. I actually don't like the £700 + £5 a round very much. There have been issues with people "sneaking" on for a round without paying....and several were told that if it happened again they were kaput. There are quite a few people who don't put their names down until the last second, so you never are sure who is going to show up. I think it is a great deal for people who aren't going to play a lot....and I understand why they like it. I play more than 100 times....depending on what happens in the winter. However, I have been sticking my toes back into the tennis world again....and depending on whether my back keeps working or not, I'll start playing again (late 80's last time I played regularly at all).....and that would likely get me to join the £700+£5 group since I would tend to skip playing as much next winter if I had something else enjoyable going on (without mud). I would rather have seen them go more £800 + £5.....it would still be a benefit for a lot of people and the club would get a bit more money. I would tend to think if they even just dropped the £1200 to £1000 or £1100 it would have made more sense. But I don't know the numbers....so I am assuming it works out for the club somehow. I think we got a bunch of people switching from other clubs (that put their fees up)....so there is likely to be more money coming in from more members in total. Last I heard, the younger ages might have been full up....with not that many old fart memberships left either.

Oh......and that £700 + £5 deal.....once you hit £1200 you don't have to pay any more anyway. If you don't mind keeping your account full of money the pay as you go is just a smarter move. There is always the chance I'll get hurt during the year.....and if you pay all of it up front....you are rolling the dice. The odds are better with the £700 + £5.

There is no logic to offering the £700 + £5 deal. It's a no brainer for everyone to accept it.

No good for me, I'd be paying nigh on £1500 and that's not including the little 6/7/8/9 holes I nip down for when the opportunity arises.

£1200 is the ceiling. There is no benefit to paying £1200 up front.

I'd hazard a guess that the majority of golfers that use the course play less than 100 times a year.

I find it ridiculous that a 35 year old gets such a massive discount.

Our club has always been a very senior club. We're trying to find the next generation of golf because I'd say at least 80% of our club are over 50.

If you don't like the fact that 35 year olds get a discount - they're not the only group :D

My place exploring offering 5yrs advanced membership fixed at this year‘s renewal, with added incentive of £50 added to clubhouse account each year for the five. Club is looking at this one-off as a way of part-funding our clubhouse refurbishment. Now if I was 100% confident I’d stay for five (and all being well I probably will), I just might. Not sure if there is any repayment if I did and then didnt stay the five years. Will maybe investigate further.

I'd worry about the club storing up problems for the future.

Club is fully aware, and has taken into account, the loss of four years subs from a group of members as a result of the scheme, and so is limiting the number who can take up the option. Indeed the issue was discussed at length in the very well attended members meeting held a couple of months back, in which our clubhouse redevelopment/refurbishment options plus costs, financing and financial impacts were set out for us.

I think this is great! Play more - pay more.

Obviously there will be exceptions but generally speaking I think most clubs top attendees would be in the 55+ category!
