Absolutely I agree. Those who are retired are out every single day, rain or shine at 7am. I can only do the weekends and evenings in the summer. If you play more, you pay more init.
Frankly…though I understand your sentiment, what difference does it make to you how many times other members play? You‘ve paid your subs to be a member - you are therefore happy that you get value for your money…otherwise you wouldn’t be a member.

Our clubhouse is a bit of an old beast. Just re-doing the bathrooms...but I imagine taking care of big older buildings is a real ££££ pit.

played it a few times - the first tee shot is really inviting. You certainly have to get the right length on 18th approach shot.

Obviously the a big factor in pricing of annual memberships are the affluence of the area & the numbers of golfers in the area.
There are some high quality courses out there, with fairly low annual fees, mainly because they are in low population areas.
I think Staunton is only about £1,100 pa
But the green fee for visitors is pretty steep.
These types of courses obviously rely on running lots of opens & getting lots of visitors to keep the money coming in.

Usual increase for the forthcoming season at my club, 5% or so. Happy with that.

A friend of mine, member of a well established club, has seen his subs increase around £70 this year and they also have a food/drink tab that has been increased by 50%. This is all after the previous year's increase of subs by over £110!!

An absolute disgrace imo, the club is fully subscribed, healthy turnover, etc. and they are just fleecing their members.

Assuming that this is a members club, if they, as a group, feel they are being fleeced they could a) vote against at an AGM b) remove the current management committee and install a new one. I can ink assume that as that wasn't happened the majority of members are content with the increase.

Yep members club. I understand they are due to have their AGM and the proposals have seriously upset a good few!

Being a members club your friend will be fully aware I am sure of any planned course/facility developmentd, and he’ll understand that the money to pay for any such projects, never mind the massive hikes in energy costs, can only come from the members. Indeed even without there being any club/course developments, every club in the country is having to find a lot extra for this year, and who knows for how long, to pay the energy bill. The increase your friend has experienced sounds perfectly reasonable in the circumstances.

Your mate isn't stupid. A friend of mine is a club manager and says in the current climate if they were starting again from scratch it would be a small barista style cafe, small changing room with some shoe lockers only and toilet facilities only.

Big clubhouses are a HUGE drain now.
Agreed, a smallish clubhouse, with good toilets and showers, is the way forward.

Every club is NOT paying a lot extra for energy. Some signed up for a year or more of constant costs a while back. Which is likely why our club is NOT raising costs at all for the next year. Most clubs?....yeah, maybe...probably.

A lot of costs have gone beyond energy costs , greenkeeping items , drinks , raw materials, staff costs , food etc

Everything is going up

Yep....so why is our club not raising rates?

I agree with you........I just think it is something our club has accidently lucked out on.

Guess depends on what is happening with the accounts and what’s planned for the coming years - if your club have surplus b money and are happy to eat into it or have budgeted to ensure they cover all costs etc

Have just joined a new club having relocated. We have a pretty big clubhouse but the main bar has been closed for the winter, only using the stud bar and reception. The main bar will reopen on 1st March for the season, but I don’t currently know if it’s planned long term or not. The membership fee went up about 10% on last years rates but still 50% less than where I was down south.

We had an operating surplus last fin year, but I‘d rather we didnt burn it all in an effort to just not increase subs. Yes…use some of it to cover increased costs next year, but it won’t cover increased costs for long, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. A balance of using some surplus and increasing subs seems appropriate.

Just checked to see what’s happening in the local area and was very interested to see that two local members clubs are announcing that they are not increasing prices for the forthcoming season. Both decent clubs albeit towards the lower end of the relatively narrow local cost band.
Either they are using surpluses or not increasing any staff wages or reducing expenditure across a range of items or making large cuts or they are worried about losing members (they would both have probably been just about full). Interesting policy.
