Are you too cool for the Texas Wedge?

A Guy at our club putts anywhere from 40 yards and in, but not only on flat surfaces as long as the grass isn't to long he will putt. And he is frustratingly good at it how he judges some of them I don't know. It is certainly a skill in it's self when you see him do it.

The OPs bunch clearly haven't played a lot of links golf. Besides - putting from 50yds isn;t without it's risks especially when as in links course there can be big swales on the green approaches and especially the immediate surrounds to the greens. Texas eedge is a great shot to play but you have to be careful.

If I'm just off the green and the grass is a little fluffy I'll always prefer to chip.
But sometimes you just look at the lie and you are in two minds.
When it's like that, I'll putt.
A little doubt in your mind is the last thing you need with a delicate chip.

On a proper links course you can putt from a long way out.

Played Kingsbarns with a caddie who suggested I use a putter from the ladies tee on a very short par 3 !

As I am not very good at chipping, I use my putter from off the green whenever I can. For me it's the percentage shot that usually gets the ball close to the hole. As I do this most of the time, I am usually pretty good at judging how much the fringe grass will slow down the putt. :)

I struggle with pace if there is a fair amount of ground to cover before it gets to the surface.

Certainly no stigma attached to it - if the conditions or situation make it the better option.......then get the headcover off!!

Am I right to think that a "Texas wedge" is using a putter from off the green?

I'll putt if the conditions allow, but I admit that chipping is not my strong point.

I've played with a couple of people who will never use a putter if not on the green- I've seen them both chip when only an inch off the green. They both say that it saves making the decision "when to putt, when to chip"
Interestingly, very different standards of golfer- one a single figure female player, the other a man playing off 28+

Google "Texas Wedge" or "Golf Chipper" and you'll soon see, I've been using one lately as my chipping wasn't the best but today I didn't use it once and hit every chip with my PW/50*/56* wedges so it makes a bloody good training aid if nowt else !...

I'd use a putter all day around the greens if the grass in front of me is clean enough. Takes away any threat of duffing/thinning it out of the equation and I'm much more confident with putter in hand than wedge.

Are a Texas wedge and a chipper the same thing? A texas wedge is just a putt from off the green, to use a chipper is giving up

As far as I know they're one and the same !...

I was once told by someone that "a chipper is for people that can't chip" to which I replied "A wedge is for people who wanna make their life difficult" at the end of the day it's a bloody good training aid before moving on to the wedges if nowt else !...

I'm pretty sure they aren't the same
