I Am Terrible In The Wind And I'm Sick Of It

Wind directing the last couple of days has been perfect for our “tougher” holes

Have managed to reach the big par 5 in 2 multiple times and also our SI going in with a 50 degree or PW ( it’s 460 )

Yesterday one of the PP drove it to just 15 yards off the green 😂

Yeah, we also had the slightly friendlier wind direction on Sunday. The one that keeps you in bounds rather than sending you out of bounds. 😄

I noted when talking with my mate (who also slices it) that when we say it's a "helping wind" we mean right to left rather than wind behind like when the pros say it. 😂

I'm always a little jealous of those who get helped by the wind...it just doesn't seem to make any of our holes easier, just the hard ones harder.....

It's always interesting playing a links course in an "opposite" wind. Happened to me at Porthcawl. Off the tee, the fairway bunkers at 200 yards were easy to carry downwind. Then playing into the wind the fairway bunkers at 250 were out of range. But then it was so hard to hit the greens. About half way round I realised what was going on.

I've also experienced this at Littlestone, a classic out and back links where one nine will always be much tougher than the other based on the wind. Think it evens itself out over 18 holes.

I played Porthcawl in the Spring Open, played well the first 10 holes, then couldn't get anywhere near the 180 yard 3 11th with a 4 iron, then the 12th was even more brutal! Driver, 4 iron, 4 iron, Wedge! What a course though!

Wind was favourable for us today (but not overly strong, about 16 mph) on some holes. On a downwind par 5 of about 475 yards I hit driver 316 yards, then hit a 9 iron about 177 yards, which landed on the green and ran through by about 10 yards , chipped on and 2 putted for a rather disappointing 5 :p:p

Did make me feel like a young bomber though, rather than a retired 11 handicapper!

I like to stay low when it's windy. Unfortunately it's always low down wind and always a coming down with snow on into wind

Be blowing a hoolie later today for our midweek comp steady 18 mph with gusts up to 35 mph

It’s June man ffs same again on Saturday as well

Yeah.. we probably had an unnaturally warm May, but June is making up for it by being trash so far. I've got a singles match on Saturday, looks like consistent drizzly rain and 26-30mph gusts. Great.

Yeah it kills my enthusiasm big time at least it’s not strokeplay tonight

You have to learn to use the wind. If it's left to right and you hit a fade just aim miles left left and smack it as hard as you can. If it's not possible due to trees etc don't hit driver!

A great start for first 2 holes (1st is sheltered and 2nd downwind and up hill) then the third is at the top directly into and the following 3 holes after is all death on the right hand side.

Well my normal tendency to grip the thing like I’m hanging on for dear life came in on the 3rd and fought it all the way round 😂

Played about 4 decent shots but got it around for 32 points

This is such terrible advice. Doing that is exactly why I ended up starting this thread - it doesn't work! What happens is, I aim miles left, but something in my brain doesn't let me commit to a target that for left and you end up subconsciously opening the face up to 'guide' it back to the fairway - that's when you get a massive slice. It's a tale as old as time. Also, literally everyone says don't hit it harder because it spins up more and the winds murders it.

Actually, were you doing bad advice on purpose as a joke and it's whooshed over my head? I'm not sure because it's early and I'm ill. 🙁

I did this on Sunday, aimed well left. MULLERED the thing straight into the trees, wind didn't touch it. My PP said, "you hit that right where you were aiming" - I think he thought I didn't realise I was aiming that far left. I was like, "I know I did!!"

It's genuine advice! What you might be doing is just aiming your feet further left creating even more of a slice.
If you genuinely have a fade just aim left, trust it and let the wind do it's work. Fighting it is a recipe for disaster

not so much at Tain and Dornoch, but Nairn at times was harder downwind if it was really dry and hard. not a chance of stopping the ball at times, ive been hitting a wedge from 170 before and still gone through the back.

Tains just as bad, the other week I had 220 to the back and went long with an 8 iron. Came up short with a 4 iron with 140 to the front as well 🤣
