The Tinkerman..

Further tinkering is afoot as well... Nothing major though. I've never liked using a line on the ball as it made be obsess over the line and generally not give pace enough thought. However, during a little bit of putting practice I was doing at lunchtime, I noticed that I very deliberately line my ball up slightly toe-side with the putter. Why am I doing this? I'm not sure. When I consciously lined it back up to the middle it felt weird, but obviously that is where strike is going to be best. So I've just drawn lines on all my balls, simply to make sure the middle of the ball is lined up to the sight line on the putter, rather than lining the ball up to the hole. 😄

21, I notched it down 1 so it wouldn't be too close to my 23° hybrid.

Anywho, I've just ordered the SFT 5 wood instead, which is 19° but can be lofted up to 20. This should be a lot more suited to me in theory so we'll give that a go.
So by lifting it down you’ve opened the face which obviously exacerbates you swing path and face angle give you more of the shot you don’t want.

By lofting up the 5 wood you’ll be closing the face which may well work more in your favour.

Yep. I do wonder how much difference that all makes ('opening' or 'closing' the face by loft adjustment), but it should certainly be a lot easier to square the face on the SFT 5 wood lofted up. (y)

For me it makes a huge difference, if I deloft a driver to open the face I have so much more confidence and aggression in the strike knowing I’m not going to turn it over and whang one miles left. My natural shot is a draw so I need an open clubface at address to give me that and more confidence.

Having my own Tinker with my wedges. I love the feel of them but having ordered my new Driver with a midsize grip as it helped me grip looser. I’ve ordered some Multi compound GP Align grips to put on the wedges.

There being it’ll help me loosen the grip and have softer hands to improve wedge control more. If that works it’s just the irons that will need it but that will need it as well but I might buy new irons yet so jury is out on whether I bother Changing those grips.

Will not the ridge be in an odd position if you open the face of the wedge

Who knows till I try it, kind of the point of tinkering isn’t it.

But in my head it won’t be odd at all as it’ll just be another feel that can be used as feed back that the face is in the correct position as it will feel different in the hands.

Right, the new club arrived today so I've just done a three-way comparison at the range.

G430 Max 7 wood (20°)
New G430 SFT 5 wood (20/20.5°)
My old Cobra F9 7 wood (21°)

The Max 7W, even with 6g of lead tape in the heel, still sliced on 2 of the 5 shots. I just can't square it up for love nor money. That'll be going on eBay shortly.

SFT 5 wood - dear God, this might be the easiest wood to hit I've ever had. I started it off at its highest loft of 20.5°, but it actually looks really closed on the ground which kind of looks weird to me. So I dialled it back to 20° and it didn't look so bad. But it's just lightyears easier to hit than the Max. The head is noticeably bigger, feels more forgiving and is. Everything went straight - tiny little 5 yard cut maybe. The Tensei Orange shaft is a touch shorter than standard so it plays like a 7 wood anyway which is ideal.

F9 - It goes dead straight as well to be fair, and felt like going back to see an old friend. But it still has that very slight tendancy to draw, which is so alien to me and the thing that started me doubting it in the first place. ChatGPT said it's a bit more head-heavy than the Pings which is why I might find it easier to turn over slightly - I guess that makes sense because it's not actually draw-biased at all. It's certainly better than the Max anyway. Will probably keep it for a while yet as back-up, still a bit sentimental to sell it as it served me well.

No hesitation in putting the SFT 5W in the bag though. Happy at the moment - until the first time I duff it of course. 😂

Experimenting with irons...

So, I bought some new irons, and think I've plumped for the wrong shafts.

Anyone know a decent marketplace/site where you can buy second-hand shaft sets (or swap out ones you don't want!)??

Watch out for a post in my "Old Man Yardages" thread in a week or so's time. For now, all i will say is that I played around with my driver loft on an indoor trackman last week and can clearly see a change in where the ball lands, dependent on loft. The more I lofted up the more it brought my landing area from right to left (I'm a right hander)...change in shot distance was relatively minor.

I just need to create a graphical representation of the data to demonstrate the change clearly...once I've done that, I will add the chart to the thread mentioned.

“Lofting up” does close the face of the driver when you look down on it. The “lofting up” is done when you square up face at address to point it down your line. If you want an open face when you look down at the club, decrease the loft.

Can you simply return the entire set? Otherwise (note I am in the EU) Nordica Golf (based in Sweden I believe) have served me well. Golfclubs4cash sometimes has sets of shafts.

I love this search for that spot in the bag. Ironically it seems you put a lot of effort in buying a club that perhaps slightly outperforms the Cobra club you had. I am not being nasty, I sympathise.. I have gone through a similar quest for my 155 yard carry club - am now relatively happy with my Wilson fybrid...but it started with wanting to replace a club that I lost somehow and was actually quite happy with...

Been contemplating going back to regular in my irons for a long time as I’m finding lighter stiffs have me losing tempo. A friend has just ordered the oil can t150’s so will be selling his 1 year old t150s in reg.

Sunday the convo comes up about selling them for him and I decided to hit one out of curiosity…. Whoops! As thought the heavier reg completely slowed my swing and sorted the tempo issues. Looks like t150’s might be going into the bag in 2 weeks 🤦‍♂️

Mentioned it in another thread, but yeah, I still don't like using a line on the ball. 😂 Every time I do it I just focus way too much on trying to hit the line on the ball with my putter instead of just focussing on the target. I putt much better when I forget about the line completely. Back to the drawing board on that one.
