How To Hit A 5 Wood off the grass

I'
The only advice I’d give is to only use it when the conditions are right, ie, nice clean lie, you can easily get to the back of the ball. I’m also very inconsistent with mine, but sometimes that has come down to me checking the yardage, that’s a 5 wood, and just hitting it even when the conditions don’t allow, setting up to fail.
I like this. Maybe this is the problem. I thought it couldnt possibly be me. 😁

Firstly, buy a new 5 wood. Then find out that it doesn't help. Then, buy a 17 degree 3 hybrid. Figure out that that's too hard to hit. Then, buy a beautiful shiny utility iron after watching a Mark Crossfield video. Discover that that's even harder to hit than the 3 hybrid. Finally, get the old 5 wood out, put it just forward of centre, grip down a bit, make a smooth swing and ask yourself why you spent all that money.

BTDT … ? 😉

For me it was around the 7 wood area of the bag. And yes, it's quite autobiographical except I never buy new, and sold what I didn't like, so only spent a little money in the end. Now I am kind of getting on with a Wilson Fybrid..and to make matters more silly, I actually somehow lost the club I set out to replace (the kitchy but effective: 'Perfect Club 21 degree'..)

I have a Titleist u505 utility iron at 19deg instead of a wood. It is a brilliant club, very forgiving.

Key words. Grip down a bit. Made a big difference for me. Just half an inch or so .

I find the biggest problem with Fairway woods and Hybrids is :

Thinking of them as a mini driver and leaning back like a driver, guaranteed thin or top.

Hitting them like an iron with forward shaft lean, guaranteed push or fade.

What works for me is staying upright, shaft pretty upright at impact and feel as if you're pushing the ball along the ground.

I like this. I that that describes perfectly how the old, no disrespect, guys hit their fairway woods. Very consistent. Odd thing is with driver they are very erratic. Maybe they should just put the ball on a lower peg on the tee and hit a fairway wood ?
