I Am Terrible In The Wind And I'm Sick Of It

Whenever I try and hit one low, I get my hands forward, ball back in the stance - and it just fires out to the right with a big fade, so not particularly helpful. I guess when I move my hands forward, it opens the clubface, and I struggle to then get it closed again.
Ball back of the stance is a punch, need a short swing, and want to keep the weight on your front foot.

For a stinger, ball front of stance, hands forward, not leaving over the ball, but try to make it feel like the shaft lean is similar to what it would be if you had a normal stance

??? doesn't seem to make sense? Typos?

Played Beau Desert yesterday in 25-30 mph winds gusting to 40mph.

Great fun, shot 5 over handicap. Was easily a 3-4 club wind and keeping it as low to the ground as possible was the order of the day. Felt like I hit a lot of 120 yard punch shots with a 7/8 iron.

Shot 5 over handicap (80) with a birdie (driver 8 iron) into the par 5 last.

I don't mind the wind as long as it dry and you can use the ground. High winds is not something you want to play in every day but if you go out with the mind set that you won't shoot a PB that day and everyone is affected by it then you can still get the head down and put in a good score.

It's a different kind of golf, it might not be pretty, you might have to lean on your short game more than normal but a decent score is achievable.

In the old days, the Css used to move a shot or two due to big winds. The reality of the course it was probably about 7 shots harder than normal, and that is OK. It's remembering that.

Breezy again today, seems to be a common occurrence at the moment. I shift my right foot back and inch and flared it out 45° and definitely hit some more solid strikes, actually drove fairly well overall this time. Again though, it wasn't the most damaging direction of wind this time.

It's funny how the pros are wide open at impact, yet the best advice for me is to do the opposite, stay closed and keep back to target for as long as possible. 😂 Different game.

I think you'll find the pros lower half are wide open, but their shoulders are pretty square.
The lower half creates a lot of the power and the shoulders dictate the swingpath direction.
If you flare out you right foot, that can encourage a sway. Not too bad if the ball is teed up but best avoided for fairway shots.

PLaying in the wind is tough, in the last 3 days we have had 7 shots worth of PCC (2, 2 & 3), before that, we only had a total of 6 all the way back to the start of the year (1, 1, 2, 1, 1).

Yeah, this is only for driving. For every other shot I flare the left foot out a little instead to encourage me to turn and get my weight onto lead side.

I’m not going to read the 100+ replies, but I’m sure they contain myriad well meaning tips, some practical and some more technical. The key point though is that you need to practise hitting these shots in order to commit to executing them on the course. Are you going to practise?

Secondly, where have you been playing that is exposing you to strong winds? If it’s Hertfordshire then in reality you have just been playing in a light breeze. Typically no need to play shots differently, just take an extra club (or 2) into the wind.

If you watch the pros in the Open, they generally just play their normal game these days, they don’t practise little knock down shots to use one week a year. They play the shots they are used to executing week in week out.

So what are you actually looking for? The reality is that the better your ball striking, the straighter it will fly through the wind, so lessons are the only logical fix.

Yes I go to the driving range once or twice a week, have done all year so far.

You know where I play, and we had a few weeks consecutively where it was gusts up to 30mph. When it's left to right or straight into wind, my drives were just going 50-70 yards right due to the fact I can only hit fades, and fades don't work with that wind.

Funnily enough I think the answer is always the same for me at the moment. Just stop swinging so long. I've been trying and trying to keep my backswing shorter, but strong wind is something that gets into my head and I end up trying to swing harder without meaning to, which just adds spin and adds more fade, so exactly what I don't want.

Hopefully we won't have 30mph winds again now until at least November. 😂

Don't bet on it. I think we're get strong winds again long before November

Like you, I always feel I need to hit it harder into the wind. It’s counter intuitive to swing easy. It’s a lovely feeling though when you punch an iron into the wind with a smooth three quarter swing, and because you’ve slowed everything down you flush it and the ball flies like a bullet.

Go on a links break. You’ll lose a few balls early on but you will figure out how to keep it in play when you’re down to your last ball on the back nine 🤣
