Until about two or three years ago I didn't bother practicing much as I was improving just be playing regularly - but then of course I hit a bit of a glass ceiling where I needed to start working on it.

I typically go to the local range on a Tuesday lunchtime (work from home Tuesdays), which is £4.50 for 50 balls. On Thursday nights I used to play football, my wife would have her best friend round for the evening - my football group has died out now, so I was thinking to keep the same arrangement and go to my nearest Trackman range instead. It's £12 for 100 balls there, which I can take my time over, spend an hour and half ish there.

But when you add it all up it's a lot steeper than you realise. £16.50 a week is £858 a year on practicing - some people's actual memberships aren't that much! Over 70 quid a month in practice sounds insane tbh. But people will say you need to be practicing twice a week to really improve. (Granted my football worked out a bit less than a fiver a week, so I can deduct that I suppose.)

I don't really have the option of practicing at my club, they have a hitting area that you use your own balls for, and a putting green, that's about it. Maybe in the longest nights of summer I could get out and do nine holes on those Thursdays nights between 8 and 9pm but that feels a long way away right now.

How much do you all spend just practice? Is £70 a month something you'd be willing to put in to get better at golf?

I go to the range (Top Tracer) once a week. It is half practice and half just getting out of the house on an evening. Top my range card up when required so not exactly sure on the cost as I use 1-3 baskets depending on how I feel but certainly a lot less than the £70 a month quoted above.

I drive up to visit my dad in Notts every week. If the journey goes well and I'm early I'll pop to the range at a nearby course for half an hour.
That happens about once a month.
£3 for a small basket of balls, so £36 per year.
Hadn't realised I was spending that much.

Not a lot. In winter I’ll go to the range probably twice a month, so probably about £15 a month tops. But I play throughout the winter so most of my practice takes place when I play.

In the summer I rarely visit the range. I’d far rather play.

Range once a week in winter with Jamie, £7 for a large basket. He’ll hit the majority of them.
He gets free range balls at Huddersfield so he’ll practice there on a weekend, and in the summer we’ll go up a couple of evenings midweek.

Got a good short game area at Dewsbury which if course is free, plus they’re in the process of installing some big driving nets, so all bases are covered.

In real terms, it’s probably no more than £150 a year for both of us.

I practice at the course three times a week, midweek is before work
Cost is (converted) 6 pounds per visit and I’ll get 55 balls on the range plus as much time as I want on short game area then putting. So, each visit is minimum 90 minutes but over 2 hours if it’s a day at the weekend if I’m not playing

So its maybe costing 75 pounds a month on top of green fees and while I’d prefer it to be less I think it’s a pretty good deal for the standard of facilities

Hitting 55 takes about 45 minutes then 20 minutes short game then same time for putting
Practice is a huge factor in improving my game and enjoyment and getting my handicap down and I find it a fun activity in itself

We have a range and get 20% of as members so 60 balls is about 4 quid.
Also decent enough chipping and putting areas. I go a couple of times a week in the winter to the range.

Are you really going to go down that route 🙄

and practice not allowed on the course
What route? I'm just questioning the zero bit as surely you pay a membership no? If you never have a practice putt or chip, maybe play a few holes for practice on a summer eve then yes it's zilch otherwise not so much.

I’m going to suggest that the OP is talking about money spent at ranges and maybe lessons as opposed to going down to finite details about membership fees and a couple of putts on the putting green before going out to play a round of golf

Nothing as we have a good range and range balls are free and unlimited to members...

...of course its not really free - but it is free at the point of delivery....

None...turn up not even a practice putt, first hit of the day is off the 1st, hence I normally make a bogey, if I make a par
look out I could be in for a good day.

Indeed. We could be here a long time if we're trying to work out how much each putt on the practice green actually costs you out of your membership fees...:unsure::unsure:

That would be silly , my point is that I have "free" access to the putting green and chipping area but that's only because I am a member, so it does have an associated cost, just not at point of use.
