Are you too cool for the Texas Wedge?

I'm a wedge man but not exclusively. Not very good putting from the fringe but I do have the 8 iron bump n run in the locker for such occasions.

Love chipping with wedges, and hole my fair share. Not a power hitter so I focus on tidy short game to keep my scores in check.

I was give a short game lesson on Monday and tried to revert to an orthodox set up and action today. Probably not my wisest choice given it was a medal today (and that was proven) so was using the putter wherever possible.

Definitely an 'it depends on the situation' guy.

I've putted from 80yds - to 4 inches! And Rescue chip-putted in from a yard or so off the green (yesterday).

If you feel uncomfortable over a shot, it's highly unlikely to be a very good shot!

Not sure I'd be using the putter from many places off the greens at Craigielaw though. Rescue putt perhaps, but the fact that most greens are raised adds a complexity that I'd sooner not have.

I putted on the 2nd at Blackmoor from 180yds!!!

Left myself 80yds and made the up/down for par.

In club foursomes k/o match yesterday we're one up played last - we are 80yds from green in two opponents are 130yds from green in two - over their ball is clubs best exponent of Texas wedge - and he sticks one to four feet. My buddy misses green - they hole putt for birdie and we are off to extra holes. We won on 21st but his tw on 18 was brilliant

aye - but from 130yds :)

...and to four feet!!

These have actually confused me. People putt from 100+ yards?! What situation would you find yourself in where you would be putting from that far? Sounds horrible to me..... I don't understand. I must be missing something.

When I was a kid at Reading, I hit putter off the tee onto the green at the 8th. It was the summer of 1976 and there was no grass on the course. I was a bit of a scallywag in my youth.

Nope - not missing anything. Our opponents were about 130yds from 18th green in the middle of the 'tight heathland' turf fairway - fairly gentle downhill to the green - bit of left to right swing (@richart will confirm - he probably also knows the member). Our man gets his putter out and gives it a good belt - taking into account LtoR swing on approach to green - and ball ends up 4 foot from hole - his playing partner holes the putt for a birdie.

I have certainly putted from 50 yards short off the green. It is a lovely finishing hole, and if you get a good drive away, the green is very much in range, as you can run your second shot down the hill. Unusual for a closing hole to be so downhill. Goring and Streatley is another from memory, but a lot of closing holes are uphill with the clubhouse at the highest point.
