Are you too cool for the Texas Wedge?

It's not always about how the ball gets to the hole

Will use a putter off the green if it's the best option

But seen some use it all the time even when it's not the right option and their game suffers because of it

The positive thing about NOT putting from off the green is that it hones your feel for chips around the green.
My 28+ hcp mate always chips, never putt from off the green. His chipping is the best bit of his game- he's much better than me, (16 hcp)

I rarely putt from off the green when playing a bounce game/practising, for exactly this reason.

Playing at Blackmoor the other week, I was using my putter from off the green to very good effect.
Wasn't it Jack Nicklaus who once said "your worst putt is most probably going to be better than your best chip"????

Jack hasn't seen me putt. 8 iron with a putting stroke if poss.

Id say i used to be yeah !

Have always chipped from off the green no mater how close , thought putting was the hackers way , after enough bad chips im now becoming a Texas Wedger ..

I use a lob wedge for just about every chip. That changes to a closed 9 iron on links courses and sometimes I use the putter from off the green but again, only on a links.

Use it all the time around my place, far better option than to chip at Nairn and a lot of other links courses.

i used to be a "awesome" chipper from the fringe, but rarely use that shot at all as there is virtually no fringe at Nairn.

If I'm on the fringe and conditions allow then I'm putting it. More than a couple of feet and I'll chip it, unless the fairway/fring is in great nick.

I use it from very bare lies often when I play. As an 18 handicapper it eliminates the chance of a duffed chip and if you can get the speed right you can get it close.

If it's the right shot the hit it. It's not a cure for poor chipping in my mind though, it can be just as much the poor option over soggy or bumpy ground. On highly quality courses with great surfaces it's a weapon indeed! At most places I've played at in England it's a lottery.

Getting round 18 holes in the lowest possible number......that's cool

I used to play on a links course. One of the members would putt from 70yds in and was an absolute demon. Couldn't play for toffee on a parkland course with longer grass and bunkers in front of the green but on links he was very useful. Do whatever works for you. No shame in any shot in golf.

Had a round at craigielaw last week - didn't chip once...

Interesting.... I play a huge variety of shots around the greens there. You get into spots that really force you to think about how to play the next shot. Playing there regularly has improved my short game no end!

(Huge upturned saucer greens with big undulations all over, for those that don't know the course)

When Ian Woosnam won the Masters in '91 he missed the green to the left on the last hole. He recalls thinking about chipping it but decided to putt it just in case he duffed the chip.

For me it depends. If I have thinned a wedge around the green it will be in my head so I will probably revert to the putter.
It always used to amaze me the distance that a mate of the old mans would use his putter from. The only time he would get a wedge out was when he was in a bunker.
