Rugby Union has seen glimpses of play acting but only glimpses. How have they kept a lid on it once it became a professional sport? Do the players have more self-respect? I'm inclined to think that's a part of it.

It’s down to the mentality of the players at the end of the day

They have more self respect as well as respect for their opponents , the game and the officials

Just playing devils advocate, in a very general sense, in relation to player's grappling within the box. Football is a physical game. When a corner is taken, how many people are in the box, all congested in and around the penalty spot and closer to goal? About 15-17 players? Defenders are desperate to win the ball and get it clear, attackers desperate to find space and score. I fully expect arms to be extended to try and stop opponents finding space. Clearly, rugby tackles or significant tugs of shirts is a foul, and should be given either by the on field referee or VAR (if a penalty would be the outcome). Where I sympathize with officials is that many contacts will lie somewhere on the borderline of being a foul and not a foul. Some fans will be adamant it was a foul, while others will be adamant it is not a foul and a player went down far too easily.

Personally, I certainly wouldn't be an advocate of officials awarding fouls every time players make contact. As many have correctly pointed out, players are "cheats", or at least trying to use the rules to their advantage. I suspect attacking players would throw themselves to ground more than they do now, as frightening as that sounds. Referees would probably have to award infringements on most occasions a ball is crossed into the box from a corner and free kick, and I think it would just grind to a completely tedious spectacle to watch.

However, fully agree with many comments. No idea why referees have to have words with players before the corner is taken. If the referee has spotted something he doesn't like, and he sees that as a foul when corner taken, just give the foul. You can then explain afterwards why you gave the foul. Similar with penalties. Why does the referee have to have a chat with the goalkeeper ever single penalty kick to stay on his line???? Just get on with it, and if keeper comes off line and saves it, have the penalty retaken. If players need reminded of the rules every single time, then they shouldn't be professionals in the industry. They should know these rules.

With regard to PSR and clubs being open about spending, etc, why are so many transfer deals these days reported as 'Undisclosed'? Fans from other clubs would not be able to spread rumours about dodgy deals if the details of the money that changed hands is revealed and would remove a lot of the speculation about points deductions and suchlike.
Only 4 of the transfer deals on the BBC website have figures (with 2 more reported to be/about).

That’s just not right, you are comparing apples and oranges, it’s a lazy argument continually dragged out.

It is very much right

There is significant more respect for the game , opposition and officials within rugby than there is within football

It’s prob valid with most sports when comparing how footballers act

Why should the Players show respect for someone, who on here, are constantly slagged off for being useless, incompetent and corrupt!

Songs from the fans in the grounds questioning their parentage!

How many times do we hear about parents at kids football matches or Refs being attacked at amatuer level?

And on and on and on!

But hey blame the players at the very top, the same players you accussed of cheating for decades this morning.

Comparing the actions of footballers and rugby players has severe limitations in my view. Extremely difficult to give like by like comparisons, and then come to any sort of sound conclusion (i.e. footballers are horrible people, rugby players are gentlemen)

Both are contact sports, but the foundation of rugby is very much about it being a tough, physical game. People playing rugby have to be physically strong and prepared to get battered. I'd imagine more than 95% of the time a rugby player gets hurt, they are hurt in a completely fair and legal coming together. It is absolutely futile for a rugby player to roll about in agony, and trying to convince the referee a foul has been committed. They'd be laughed at on more that 95% of the time, as no foul has actually been committed.

Whereas although contact in football is allowed, generally contact that hurts another player or causes them to fall over is considered a foul. So, it is pretty easy to see why footballers will often milk a challenge. They've lost the ball, but perhaps they can get out of jail by getting a foul awarded for them. And, when fans have demanded that more and more types of incidents are punished over the years, then that is what happens. Fouls are awarded for softer and softer incidents. So, of course, players will realise that it is easy to win a free kick when the alternative is to stay on your feet and lose possession.

Plus, I agree with PaulMdjs point above. It is almost incredible that people can be critical of players not respecting referees, when the same people will shout and scream about officials being corrupt and incompetent as soon as they make a decision they don't like. The same officials that get slagged off every weekend on all media platforms. We see players acting in the heat of the moment, and I can forgive their instant reactions at times (to a point). But, I bet many of those players have also had pleasant and respectful conversations with the officials outside the heat of the moment, officials they come across frequently. So, I suspect most footballers generally treat officials with a lot more respect than how many fans treat officials.

It is one step, but the last couple of performances certainly look more positive.
Let’s see what happens tonight 😬

To the outsider looking in, United’s performances at Arsenal and Liverpool should equate to a battering for Southampton.

Sadly, it is unlocking teams which defend deep which causes us the most problems.

And that has been the problem for City for the last few years.
