Cancelled membership. Am I liable to pay until end of April?

Your new club just needs to request the transfer and your old club needs to do this and resign you. All the info will just transfer across.
However if you owe your old club money I believe they can withhold the transfer (I recall there being something like a ‘non financial members’ or something report).
The club’s stance is likely to be that you have agreed to pay for 12 months membership and you owe this money whether you decide to leave, not play or anything else. You have merely chosen to pay what you owe in 12 instalments, the last 2 are still outstanding. Normally it is a 12 month deal not a monthly contract.
For completeness, there is a report on WHS called 'Unfinancial Members' - I can't see any members on it, whether this is because all clubs in the County are tickety boo or they haven't added members to it, I don't know.

I am pleased the the OP's position has been resolved harmoniously. Leaving a Club on a friendly basis on both sides is always a good thing, makes no sense to burn bridges.

He did mention other bits of information in regards to handicap reduction.

A knock out comp being one of them 🤯

Glad I have escaped. Decision was made easy when factoring all the new benefits new club has for my family 💪

I also assume that the club has a credit license as this is required since the FCA made changes back in, I think, 2017. Which was why may clubs moved to services like Orchard or Fairway Credit. If they are offering payment terms without a license then the member would be within their rights to report them to the FCA.

Golf clubs only need a consumer credit licence if they are charging interest. If it's just an alternative payment structure i.e. breaking down the annual fee into 12 monthly payments, and it doesn't extend beyond the year, it is not a credit facility.

I’m sure the FCA definition is related to any facility that forwards a financial facility over a set period of time and is agreed to by both parties in a binding manner. Interest is only mentioned in the section related to interest bearing arrangements.

It may have been changed since I last read/worked with it when I was working with HSBC in 2021.

Was this the same chap who was notified of a handicap cut due to some recent wins and rather than discuss it with the club and settle it he has decided to leave and join a new club?

If the club committe wasn't a fan of yours then no wonder they were happy for you to move on and in their eyes be someone elses problem.

Hopefully the new club works out for you and all the other issues don't follow you to the new club.

I agree with this view. We reverted to Fairway Credit as we were advised that even if no interest was charged we were still granting credit so required a credit licence, which was costly. As mentioned this might have changed.

I didn't call it tin pot.

I would have stayed to argue my case rather than leave with a lower handicap just for the new club to see the adjusted handicap and have people talk about why it was lowered etc.

No disrespect but you really don’t have a clue.

Taking 5 members with me says lot 👍

Lets look at it this way.

New club - Did you hear about the 6 members that joined from x club. Apparently one of them threw their toys out of the pram due to an enforced handicap cut. Wonder if he is a cheat/bandit just to win stuff at the club and the rest are part of the conspiracy.

Chinese whispers start etc etc. However I am sure you will be fine and will win the next club comp by a few points and everything will be fine :ROFLMAO:

I know many members up there hence another reason why I’m joining.

Definitely looking way into this just to prove something that won’t exist.

Keep trying, maybe try a little harder though

Conversely, at the old club...
Did you hear that 6 members have left after that usual suspect muppet complained about one of them beating him in a comp and the handicap committee had no choice but to investigate?
Oh, where have they gone? I could do with getting away from this toxic clique myself.

Or it might be somewhere in the vast grey area in between.

Many ‘issues’ have happened since I’ve been a member at that club and they all involved members who have been there a long time.

I’ve seen how it’s affected them.

Kind of like an abusive relationship where they kept going back?

Fortunately I’ve got the minerals to do something about it, people in other shoes are stuck and cannot leave.

If your new place is so great and you know so many existing members and your old old place is the pile you say it is on the other thread can I ask why you chose to join the old club over the new all those years ago?

As I say, it was 2021 last time I worked with the consumer credit requirements but they did make clear that any forwarded facility that was governed by a binding agreement was considered a credit facility. Otherwise any 0% financing would descend in to an unregulated wasteland.

3 years ago. Only been golfing since Covid so let’s keep on track.

Previous club had a couple of advantages - mainly being price.

New club is double in price but has facilities that will benefit my children, something previous club never had. I have classes they are attending all weekend.

Also has two golf courses and a par 3 alongside practice areas.

Old club didn’t even have a practice net.

Hope that answers your question

Out of interest, do you know that your new club’s Handicap Committee, if faced with the same information that your previous club’s Committee were, would have made a different decision?

In my experience it is not easy to find out about the quality (knowledge, fairness, diligence, experience) of a club’s handicap management process. In other words it’s sometimes not easy to find out which one is the frying pan and which one’s the fire.
