WHS Survey in 2024 - Have Any Results Been Published?

i saw the R&A put out a notice about promoting honest and fair use of WHS today....

I was reminded about a guy in my club who falls in to the "vanity handicap" category so had a look at his scores.

He is 5.8 Index - all his counters are General Play. His competition scores would give him a 14.4 index. Why would you do this to yourself ?!
I guess it's not impossible that he crumbles under competition pressure.

Mmm well the latest exhortation appears to be don't cheat, don't cheat, don't cheat whilst explaining how to do it, which is probably not the best psychology as the more they talk about cheating the more people will consider it.

Meanwhile they are encouraging you to put in as many GP cards as possible which will probably do nothing for speed of play.
I'm certainly damned if I'm gong to put in any GP cards for this idiotic farce and slow my play down.

How does putting in a GP score slow you down? Putting out ‘gimmies’ isn’t a reason.

In casual play I don't take provisionals I drop the ball in convenient places and I don't putt out all of this speeds up play.
Saying it isn't a reason simply is not true you need to take a little care over short putts, my score may be different but I'm cheating no one.
If you don't think it makes a difference time wise all I can say is that you should see the time taken for similar three balls in casual play versus medal play or Stableford at our course.

Things that do not contribute to slow play as they only take a few seconds:
  • Taking provisionals.
  • Taking care over a few putts.
Things that do contribute to slow play as they add minutes:
  • Not taking provisionals does slow play down as a walk back to the previous sport may be needed.
  • Spending in excess of 3 minutes looking for golf balls.
  • Unnecessarily marking golf balls
  • Maintaining the "honour" and not playing ready golf
For some reason there are people who won't do these things in casual rounds but will as soon as a card is in their hand - why?

The phrase 'I'm marking a card' is one I've come to dread I know it will be followed by more time spent looking for balls , most of us abandon a lost ball locally within 30s in casual play , spending time over short putts and endless faffing. A lot of people I play with haven't marked a card in years and our golf is a lot quicker, we very rarely play golf that is compatible in form with WHS rules of handicapping as this is a slower form of play.

But you are not playing to the rules of golf.
When doing so, the time difference between a competition, a general play round and a casual round should be negligible. The drivers of slow play are not the things you listed but dozens of other things.

People do take a little bit more time when putting out and marking a card

That adds up to no more than 5 or 10 minutes tops in most rounds. Stopping at the halfway house, people using carts and seniors stopping for a pee every other hole adds more time to a round.

Slow play is obviously an issue at times, but so is the need for some people to rush round as fast as possible.

There are multiple factors that point to slow play

And playing in a comp or with a card in hand will always be slower than a social round

No but there has just been a notice put out encouraging me to put in more GP cards thus potentially me delaying others n the course. Frankly they can get stuffed. I haven't put in a GP card for at least five years and I'm not going to waste my fellow members time by doing so now.

I'm not sure that I have ever seen fast play as a problem.

It can easily be more than five minutes if everyone is putting, if there are a few lost balls, if one is unsuspected and no provisional has been taken etc etc.
In no way does putting in a card stop people from having to take a pee, use a cart or stop at our (non existent) halfway house.
Just because there are other causes of slow play it is not a reason for the authorities to inflict a further one on us by requesting more GP cards.

You’re certainly living up to your handle today! :p

Same reason he would want to buy a flash car when an ordinary one would do.

So some people say marking a card doesn't slow down play even though you take more time over short putts and spend the full 3 minutes looking for a ball or waste a bit more time re-teeing a provisional instead of chucking one down where you think the ball is lost.
Are these the same people that claim taking the flag out for some people and putting it back in for others causes slow play.
