No idea who was Man of the Match. Could argue for both. Hartley below average bowling 1st Innings but exceptional 2 nd Innings. 1st spin bowler since Jim Laker to take 7 wickets in an Innings since 1948, chipped in with 57 runs.
Pope poor 1st but superb 2nd.

Would hate to split them and would have a joint MOTM.

Thoughts?

I’d go for Pope purely because, without his magnificent knock, England wouldn’t have had a sniff. Great comeback from Hartley on debut, but his fabulous effort would not have happened without Pope.

And note to self. Don’t ever, ever slag England off until a Test match is over.

Very valid comment. It's similar to a Man U/Liverpool discussion. On balance I would go for Hartley, being his fist test, hammered in first Innings, came back well and he is a Lancastrian, the County I used to be a member. Slightly bias!

Delighted for Hartley, but equally for Stokes, who came in for some fearful stick for not taking him out of the firing line during that first innings.

Far from being poor captaincy, it was absolutely inspired. He effectively said, come on son, I don’t care you’re being dispatched to all corners of the ground. I believe in you. It turned out to be a brilliant ploy.

Of course, hindsight is a wonderful thing!

I think I'd have gone for Hartley, because as much as his wickets were crucial, he also batted really well in both innings changing the tempo in the first and keeping Pope company for ages in the second. Without those knocks, we wouldn't have had sufficient runs on the board to win the game.

I'd also put a shout in for Joe Root. You could reasonably say that he was England's best bowler!

Played yesterday morning and couldn't believe the result when I got in. Brilliant from Hartley but more so Pope who got England to a defendable target and I'd make Pope my MoM for that alone
