SA will be gutted to lose after only needing 30 from 30, I saw that WinViz had them at 95% at that point! Fantastic bowling from Bumrah and a stunning catch turned it on its head - he messes that up and it goes for 6 and I suspect SA would have won.

What does SA need to do to get rid of the Choker tag… they came really close

Rohit & Kohli retire in style

Seems a good idea. If only Southgate had given players an early opportunity.

What a ridiculous statement. Southgate has brought in loads of young players.

Just in the current Euros squad there is a big group of players who were given "an early opportunity" for England when they could still have been playing in the U21s: Bellingham, Wharton, Guehi, Mainoo, Palmer, Saka, Gallagher, Foden, TAA.

We could look back at previous squads and find plenty of young players who were brought in for qualifiers and tournament squads. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of your narrative

Really? Not an appropriate conversation for the cricket thread so I'll give one reply. As was discussed of the footie thread, Southgate insisted with regulars like Henderson etc in qualifiers and friendlies who didn't make the squad which didn't allow him to try other players in their place and in different formations. Not going to pollute the cricket thread further

Team is up for the First Test:

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Smith
Woakes
Bashir
Atkinson
Anderson

You would hope it would be enough for a callow West Indies side, but it feels a little thin in places.

Yeah we will leave this alone on this thread as you can’t read facts.

- Top six pretty much locked in for now.
- England sticking with the strategy that a wicket keeper is not required in England.
- Woakes has become a specialist in English conditions.

He has been behind the stumps for them admittedly second choice

But then they should have gone for Rew who is better behind the stumps and with the bat

Long term I suspect Rew will come in to take the gloves and the hope will be that Smith can seize one of the 4/5/6 slots, though I still think Ollie Robinson has been hard done to at this stage!
