Think they will get over with a couple overs to spare

An excellent game of cricket. England have a lot to do to have a chance in this series. Australia were very rusty and made poor decisions tactically all game and still won.

Fair play to Cummins and Lyon, calm batting to see them through.

Not sure I understood the continual short bowling at the end there. Equally, if you don't trust Jimmy there then why pick him?

Sets up the series beautifully but England need to find a spinner quickly and think hard if Stokes knee is up to 5 days.

Was a great game of cricket

But some big decisions ahead for England

Need to bring in someone that’s a bit different as opposed to three seamers

Need to find a spinner that can last 5 days

And bring in a proper keeper

That last hour reeked of fear of defeat paralysis.

Didn’t take the new ball early enough. Didn’t attack the stumps against tailenders. Sat back to accept singles from way too early. Didn’t bowl Anderson.

Don't think so. They attacked the stumps and the outside edge without success for 45 minutes, before concentrating on leg theory when the runs required got down to the teens.
Looked like they fancied a bit of random seam movement from the old ball over bounce and speed of a new ball because of the obvious associated risks.
That's all just cricket tactics and there were perfectly good reasons for all the decisions. As with any sport, it's easy to pick fault after a loss.

Wood has to come in and probably Bess?

Foakes should have been keeping but they wanted Crawley in and you can’t keep Bairstow out after his summer last year

Great Test Match, shame about the result, let’s hope Jimmy’s not injured, if not injured he should have given him a couple of overs when trying to break that last partnership.

Think they have already said that. The management team want a settled team so they can just play the game without fear of getting dropped. They want to get away from the revolving door selection policy of recent years and get players just concentrating on the game.
Also, there is no need for knee jerk reactions, it wasn’t like we were bowled out twice for 150 and Australia got 700+

Very true but this test has shown that Anderson, Stokes and Mooen can’t bowl two full innings. That’s a reason enough for a change.

If wood doesn’t play when they’ve asked for absolute roads then the selection committee are fools

Agreed. Chopping and changing is not the current England way and rightly so. Just look back at the bad old days, when even top players were playing under constant pressure of the fear of being dropped - the results then spoke for themselves.

I’m reading Robin Smith’s autobiography at the moment and that fella rarely played a game without the threat of being dropped, despite his talent. It’s impossible to perform at the highest level under that sort of pressure.

Nothing wrong with tweaking things though. The current bowling attack just doesn't look to have the penetration to be able to take 20 wickets. Losing Leach was a huge blow, as was the injury to Archer who seems unlikely to reach his potential owing to recurring injuries, especially as there are no obvious replacements. The seam attack is just a little too samey. Broad bowled well I thought and Anderson can still tie batsmen down and slow the flow of runs, but that attack with Stokes just dollying medium pace stuff is not going to bowl out this Australian batting line up twice in every test. I think they need to get Wood in the side, that leg side attack would have been a lot more threatening at his pace.
