It is a very true piece. We can all have that "one" round and shoot a great score and get cut 2 or 3 shots but we then spend the next 6 months getting 0.1 back each time as we can never reproduce it again

Great article and one that rings true in my golf experience only too vividly, not only in the standard required to compete, but the punishment of playing really well once in a few months in a comp.

One time some penalties came my way in a comp I played some yrs ago.
After £5 to enter the incomming pro's comp, I played some brilliant golf and finished joint 2nd, 3rd on count back.
The lovely prizes were all lined up in the club house, I watched player after player pick up some great kit, especially those, nearest pin, longest drive or hole in one types.lol.
All I got was a BROLLY! that cost the pro less than the entry fee! then following that I got docked a stroke.

So in summary.....Paid more than prize was worth to enter.
Lost a stroke for playing 18 holes well.
Left with more difficulty in future comps.
Felt crap and wondered what golf was all
about, wondered if pro's pay more than
the winnings are worth?
Got fed up with comps for a time.

Maybe it was just the club I was a member of but this post topic just sprang it all to my mind again, it happened to a couple of people at this club,it hapened to me twice!

I agree, it is harder than most give credit for. As it is more compelling, exciting and addictive.

As for the reward. I believe the best reward is the feeling in knowing you beat the course. Sweep money and trophies are great but knowing you beat the course is a top feeling. Too many bandits out there for to judge a round on their scores.
