Does Sport England via lottery funding not actually pay players/sports for success (in terms of medals) at the Olympic?

There are performance related bonuses yes, but you are not being paid to just turn up which I think is what was being suggested earlier in the thread.

A sports performance in an Olympic Games will also contribute heavily to how much funding it will receive over the next cycle.

I think your whole mindset is warped by the money wrapped around LIV Golf.

What's a 'nominal' fee anyway? These are 24 golfers whose total net worth probably top a few billion. Do you really think it would be a better event if they were getting a million quid each?

It's got nothing to do with LIV Golf.

Punters are paying over the odds for tickets, food, drinks, accommodation, travel etc- contributing to a huge money spinner for the organising bodies. Why shouldn't the players - who are without question, the most important part of the event, get paid for participating?

Was Nick Faldo there out of the goodness of his heart?

That for some people the - ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country - spirit exists, and representing your family, country, and continent is sufficient in itself, and for 1 week in 104, very rich men are desperately willing to engage with and be part of such an event, and not count the greenbacks.

The money goes to PGA pensions

Credit to the Marco Simone. It was a significant player in the drama, and a very interesting test for the players. I thought some of the ankle high rough looked too random, which added to the fun, but not necessarily the fairness. And its well the deeper, further off line rough that was apparently there was drastically cut back. But as a design, the course was magnificent. Greens dont have to be lightening fast - the curves and steps they faced, or reward for being on the right section, was a great test of their skills. The shape of holes, level changes, bunkers, and reward for the skills of the real shotmakers (Rahms 2nd to 18 on Fri, and Rorys chip to 17 yesterday, were extraordinary) and the in-form. The benefit of having tour players play more longer shots to greens was showcased. We saw a huge number of incredibly well played shots. And those who didnt meet the standard were exposed. Top level golf as it should be.

Mate.

Mod edit: by all means contest an opinion. Attacking the poster for an opinion is not acceptable, nor is the name calling that went with it.
I think you’ll find I’m in the majority opinion wise. So perhaps the mods should take note!

Certainly not the most eye pleasing course but the final three holes were brilliant.

Surprised Iona Stephen voiced out loud at the presentation 'we are all breathing a sigh of relief' when after a pause the US team did go over to shake hands with the Euros. Was she really concerned for an instant when none of them moved that things had gone truly sour between them and it wasnt going to go to protocol ?

Great win for Europe. Got to watch quite a bit of it on the course this afternoon due to the glacial pace of a pair of 4 balls playing a scramble in front of us.

Strange how things work out. Not long ago I wouldn’t have given Europe a chance. We changed captains half way through the cycle and still had a resounding victory.

Well done to Luke and the team.

Such a shame to see the thread ruined.

I didn't even know the captain could stay on. Has anyone ever done that? I thought it was always a new one.

I actually think if you win at home then perhaps you should stay on for the next one. As it's always a little harsh that a new captain comes in and gets battered in the US and then leaves. When we when at home perhaps we should let the captain stay on and have a bash at defending it - then he steps down and a new captain comes in for the home cup.
