FiL was around and so the golf stayed on. That took years off me 😳. Way too tense, some big performances from both camps.

And breathe..............

In terms of captaincy, it has to move on. So many options in the wings. It should always be a once only job.

Just horrible. Tried telling myself to watch, just golf, doesn't matter if we lose, but I couldn't, so just kept refreshing BBC Sport website every 5 mins instead. Maybe that was worse!

Unfortunately I've had to stop watching. He was a great golfer but Faldo is so far up his own jacksy, every question comes back to being all about him. Luke Donald, we set the scene for him 30 years ago. Seve? Yes we were great weren't we?

Never seems to mention how pants he was as a captain. Having to watch the Aussies drub Portugal now.

I didn't even know the captain could stay on. Has anyone ever done that? I thought it was always a new one.

I actually think if you win at home then perhaps you should stay on for the next one. As it's always a little harsh that a new captain comes in and gets battered in the US and then leaves. When we when at home perhaps we should let the captain stay on and have a bash at defending it - then he steps down and a new captain comes in for the home cup.

Luke going for round two in the US would be a great move from the ET.
Could be the difference it needs to really have an edge in 2 years time where it will be very very tight. Precedent is there of repeat captains. Luke was thrown the job mid-term this outing, so entitled to a full cycle preparation. The logjam of potential captains looking for their turn has been wiped by the LIV defectors. Clearly there is something working very well in this years formulation - it would be the masterstroke to really snap the 10 years dominance that was Whistling Straits talk. Rose or Francesco for Adare Manor then.

They know how it works, and nobody is forcing them to play, so if the gig doesn't pay enough just give it a miss.

As someone else said, the Euro's would pay to be part of the team.
Apparently the revenues from the Ryder Cup are around 500 million dollars (see posts on the price of drinks), all the people organising etc. are being paid - is there a reason why players aren’t getting even a very small slice? Unless of course everyone does it for free and all the 500 milllion dollars goes to charity.

Back in the day, Seve, Faldo, etc, the Europeans were effectively paid in kind, as it brought credibility to the European Tour. And thus sponsors, prestige on the world stage, and funds to develop the tour and its prize funds. So there was no need for a direct payment. But that has changed, where the PGAT is now the real home of the majority of the team. US players of the past were proud to represent the USA. With the Tiger fueled growth in prize money there now though, the question of what they get for one of their golfing weekends of the year versus all the others is stark, and will be important to some mindsets. A pay solution is probably merited and will come.

Jacklin did 4 on the bounce....different era but there's nothing to stop a Captain staying on if its desired by all parties
I think they should get at least 2 - home and away...

Of course they should be paid - handsomely. It's one of the best sporting events on the calendar, and as you've rightly pointed out, generates humongous revenue for the organising bodies. Why should the players be expected to turn up and provide all the drama without earning a dime out of it?

The prices of drinks was fine. The place was jammed for a week. The experience was outstanding. For a bi-annual premium event, with the worlds top 20 golfers, that takes flights/hotels/etc for anyone there, 5 or 8 or 10 quid for a beer is trivial. More than enough there enjoying it fully without counting the small coins. The merch tent was a money printing press, with a queueing system outside such was the traffic - no end of people very keen to spend 40€ for a souvenir cap, 80e for a shirt, £15 just for a ball marker etc.

Cool, so why wasn't it free to air on the BBC then, like the good old days..?
Because BBC prioritise other things.
The players are paid more than enough already. They know they get nowt for appearing. If they feel that strongly, refuse their spot and see just how that effects them with public affection (which in turn hits their pockets with sponsors).
