Interesting analysis the day after Spieth's win by one of our local pros, using Mark Broadie's "strokes gained" statistics. This shows that Jordan's long game and his ability to hit it close to the hole from 200 yards in are more of a factor than his putting, especially short putting, which was distinctly average.

"Mark Broadie's suggested way of determining putting skill is to determine the approximate number of putts the field is having on a course from certain distances and he uses that as a baseline, for example if there is an established baseline on 20 foot putts and the field is averaging 1.6 if a golfer 2 putts then he is deemed to have lost -0.4 on the field,if they 1 putt then the are deemed to have gained +0.6 against the field, if they 3 putt then they have lost -1.4 stokes on the field.Total strokes gained putting is only the tip of the iceberg however, we can with the help of shotlink data break Jordan's stats down further
As of this morning he lies 130th out of 201 players on the PGA tour on one putts inside 5' ....hardly world class!
again as of this morning he lies 146th out of 201 players on one putts from 5'-10' ....oh he's getting worse!
as of this morning he lies 166th out of 201 players on one putts of 10'-15' ....Jesus he should pack in!
as of this morning he lies 125th out of 201 players on one putts from 15'-20'
as of this morning he lies 47th out of 201 players on one putts from 20'-25'
and as of this morning he lies 54th out of 201 players on one putts from outside 25'
Sure you agree the above stats hardly scream best putter in the history of the game, one of the things he works exceptionally hard on with his coach Cameron McCormack is speed management and evidence of this is seen in the two longer distance categories above.
Where Jordan really excels is his approach play
He currently leads in proximity to the hole out of 201 players
He is currently 2nd in greens in regulation out of 201 players
Add to that he is 4th in greens in regulation or near greens in regulation out of 201 players.
Mainly due to his ability from distance he currently lies
3rd out of 201 players in greens in regulation from 175-200yards
also 3rd out of 201 players from 150-175 yards
While inside 100yards he ranks as the 2nd best player on tour he also excels from the rough ranking 2nd on tour from inside 200yards
He leads the tour in birdie or better percentage from the fairway and lies 6th in birdie or better from the rough
It shows however that Jordan is not really a bad putter perhaps a little below tour average however he is an exceptional iron player from both the fairway and the rough with a fantastic short game, and when he gets in the mix he converts a lot of those chances which to me is down to his sheer will and determination to win!
A classic example of which we witnessed yesterday afternoon, no doubt he is an unbelievable talent, and I would like to see him complete the career slam at Quail Hollow"
