How far do you take your arms back?

If you look at the slow motion videos of the pro's on U Tube, they take the club back to about the 11 o'clock position in their backswing, before they commence their downswing.

I can't get anywhere near this position in the backswing, if I try it all goes horribly wrong.

How far do you take your club back on a normal shot & feel comfortable?

Just looked at vid of my swing and its a smidge past 9 o'clock. I'll take it for an old coffin dodger...

That is interesting.
Yesterday I went for a practice session & tried a shortened backswing, I reckon my arms were at or just past the 9 o'clock position, this felt to be the ultimate position for me that produced good powerful accurate shots.
If I tried to swing back any further, I became less accurate.
Tonight, I was looking at the pro's slow motion swings on U Tube, most of them took their arms back to the 11 o'clock position, but there were a few Zach Johnson being one of them who only took his arms back to the 9 o'clock position.

Does it matter, as long as you get a full shoulder turn? People are more flexible than others? John Daly has a massive over swing and Sandy Lyle just over a half swing.

No it doesn't matter as such.
I was just trying to get a picture of the norm, I just checked a video of Sandy Lyle & yes it is quite a short & compact swing.
I think a lot of my past problems have come from me trying to overswing for extra power.

Get a full shoulder turn and a good tempo, that will help for starters. Still lots to go wrong after that though ;)

My pro told me to try and swing to 9 o clock and momentum with naturally take me to 10ish.

Lot's of pro's only go to 10.

Just looked at my swing with the driver posted in "ask the experts" and I'd say 11 o clock - ok for a coffin dodger?

Looking at videos of mine I'd say for full shots I'm an 11 o clock. Though I tend to consciously play anything from a 7/8 iron down with a 10 o clock 3/4 swing but can get that up to 11 if I'm trying to force one.

Don't think if really matters though how far you swing long as its a complete turn. I play with an ex hockey player and never seen his arms past 9 sometimes shorter if he gets a bit quick but by god he belts it out there.
