How do you chip/pitch in winter?

Can you tell my lawn that please! It needs cutting all the way up to Christmas these days.
Yep. Cut the grass at Dad's house in Notts last week, hoping that would be it for this year. It's grown more in the last 7 days than it did in all of September.

i really enjoy pitching and chipping, its one of the things where i've seen the most improvement in my game through practice. However our course last weekend was shocking , the rough around the greens was so patchy and hadnt been able to be cut as its been wet.
Trying to pop one over a bunker when its settled down into a bare lie while covered in mud (Q comp so could only clean the ball on short mowed grass)
It was difficult to say the least

I had never heard of the use of mats in this part of the world until last year when Burnham and Berrow (a links course ) introduced them. I now know of a few parkland courses introducing them due to the ridiculously wet winter last year. The rationale is not only course protection but also a better golfing experience than exploding mud on impact and the need to clean your club after every shot.

Would I be right in thinking nobody can put any GP cards in while every shot is played off mats though?

I believe if the course mandates the use of mats in the fairway, then GP cards are fair game, but if they're used literally everywhere, then no. Might be wrong though.

Local rule E - 12 must be in place for qualifying rounds.
“When a ball lies in a part of the general area cut to fairway height or less and a putter is not being used for the stroke, the player must place a ball on an artificial mat. The mat must be placed on top of the spot where the ball came to rest.”

Do you go in the bar afterwards with muddy legs or do you put trousers on? I know it's practically the same, I'm there with trousers splattered in mud, but somehow muddy legs seem worse.

Anyway, no, it's too cold. I like shorts but I'm not a 12 months of the year wearer.
Change of shoes and socks.
The shins are nowhere near the condition of all the trousers splattered up to the thighs and certainly nowhere near as noticeable. (Our course is wet throughout winter).
I have to keep my upper body warm but lower body seems immune.
(My wife says she knows the reason for that 🤨)

Compulsory on our course for years (from Nov 1)
Nairn didnt ever have specific date but was always around that time unless the weather got cold early. most of the clubs up here now use them, with the exception of Tain who have gone back to normal play and running q comps every Sat and sunday in an attempt get more members playing and using the bar

Our course has gone the other way and done away with mats for this winter after huge improvements to course drainage. They were also losing members who were objecting to their use. As for chipping, it's the same in winter as it is in summer.

My short game has improved so much in recent years since i dropped the 3 wedges and reverted to a PW/SW set up.

In the winter i feel like i can commit a tad more to chip/pitch shots and attack greens as they're more receptive rather than a bump and run or similar.
