How is your course shaping up after winter and the dry spring?

Our greens team have been doing a lot of core infrastructure work over winter and spring - and tbh as a result the course looks a bit scruffy in places...but with that core work pretty much completed focus can turn to 'presentation'. That said - there are courses in my area that may currently be in better presentational state - but our track is in a beautiful setting; is interesting, varied and pretty darned tough...certainly in comparison with some of the much more 'lauded' courses in the area.

I was thinking yesterday after playing where I might go if I was inclined to leave (as current circumstances would enable that - or at least to get on to a waiting list) - and as much as, say, Hankley Common, Liphook, Hindhead and Camberley Heath have many admirers...and Hankley for one is always in magnificent condition, it's not the sort of club for me, and the others are a bit of a trek from my door.

Besides...I mentioned this thought to my Mrs this morning and her response was 'you couldn't leave, it's too big and important a part of your life'. And after more than 21yrs a member, I know that she's right.

Our place is improving day by day. Greens aren't ok yet, but efforts are being made to ensure they are going to be great this year, and about time too. "Scruffy" bits around the course have been cleared, so that's a great sign that my chat with the bloke who runs the green thing had not fallen on deaf ears. I was at Holdsworth Golf club on Friday and OMG massive improvements have been made there. The greens were great, although some fast, some slow, but great none the less. How have they managed to get them to heal up when other places haven't? The course looked and was superb!

Our place is much improved. The warmer weather has allowed the staff to water, cut and iron the greens daily, to the point where they are unrecognisable from a week ago. The fairways have much more even growth, and the tees are recovering.

What is difference a week makes.

Getting a lot of growth but still patchy

Issue we have now though is leatherjackets 🤬

Our course has improved, but as my original post the greens still have a long way to recover from the ravages of the winter fungal attack, still they are better than they were a week ago.

Just as a caterpillar transforms overnight into a beautiful butterfly, my track seemed transformed today compared with how I perceived it yesterday…it was looking and playing superb today.

Our course is general is looking fantastic . We have just recently purchased 4 grass cutting robots which are amazing . Unfortunately our greens are still very poor after coring in March . Like someone said earlier in the thread lack of communication is annoying, lots of rumours irrigation was working. Who knows because we barely get any greenkeeper updates

We are trialling a robot mower for (overnight) fairway cutting…would free up two green keepers couple of times a week.

Yes that’s what we did . We have an undulating course where in the winter tractor grass cutter struggle to get to because it’s too wet and churns the grass up . Robits will be fantastic for this being so light weight. Also they don’t ask for wage rises and work through the night 👍

My two courses have tried them out....I wasn't impressed. In the first case it was cutting the area around the 15th green....incredibly slow. It must have been doing calculations and/or getting visual feedback from small trees it was cutting around. It seemed to work and was quiet....but holy cow was it slow. The second case they turned it loose on the 18th fairway at the other course. Incredible straight lines it mowed....that was the good thing. Slow....slow.....slow and left clumps of grass up and down the fairway. Worker then had to come out with the tractor and blower to move all the loose grass off to the side. Looks like it cut the grass too short as well, although I would assume that could be adjusted.

I like the idea of the robot mowers....at my course here in town they get a lot of complaints about early morning mowing so they were hoping that turning these mowers loose will work......can't see it being feasible yet.

When they cut early morning with dew on the grass they leave a lot of grass clumps as the grass sticks together.

We also had a very muddy patch right by the clubhouse where it returned regularly to charge.

I think the grass cuttings over time will cause thatch because the grass isn’t picked up by the mower

Biggest problem is it can’t see balls ran over mine and munched it. 😳

We’ve been using robots at my course. I’ve seen them stop on the fairway when they detect a ball or player, then start again when the player has moved on.

I think it works best when they are operating 24/7, if they are continuously trundling around the same hole, the clippings they leave behind are tiny. They do a great job on the collars around the greens, lovely finish.

Our head greenkeeper has just reported:
Regular precipitation ceased on the 16th of February. In the 75 days since, rainfall has been negligible or nil. And to put that in context, the exceptionally dry period during the summer of 2022 extended to 71 days.
Despite that, our course condition is superb. Much helped by fairway mats.

We were trialling a robot mower. Not sure it was a success as it seems to have been short lived and there is no indication of the club wanting to buy one. I did enjoy watching it at work, stopping when it located a ball and trundling up and down. Something quite therapeutic watching it

I live very near my golf club and walk my dog regularly around it . She’s still stops every time she’s see’s the robots . She doesn’t know what to make of them …
