How is your course shaping up after winter and the dry spring?

Given the nature of many posts on this thread, and things that pop into my head about the course and I ask about (and I do…a lot 🙄), I think I’ll raise a suggestion to the club that we create a FAQs section on our club website. The golf manager, head greenkeeper and handicap and rules secretary know what these are…and at any point in time if something new or different is being done on the course and the why/when/how is not already covered, then just add a new FAQ.

Btw…I ask questions and seek clarifications from our golf manager and head greenie so that I am armed with answers and rationale as and when playing companions start moaning about this, that and the other. I get fed up listening to these moans, gripes, criticisms and opinions as I trust the head greenkeeper to be doing the right thing at the right time. All members of my club know that our head greenie is 100% and utterly devoted to the wellbeing of our course, but still too many members moan and criticise.

Anyway, and despite many concerns expressed (and I have had some) about the state of the course (as a result of some fairway saturation and flood remediation works we have carried out) and how well it will recover, it is the case that over the last few weeks things have improved rapidly and the course is come along very nicely. Next time I see our head greenie I’ll make that observation and thank him…as I always thank him for his work on the course.
I'll add.

Just out of interest I've just read the last three months Minutes of the Mens Committee Meeting...and each contains a Head Greenkeeper Report. His reports are extremely detailed and explain exactly what he and his team are and have been doing, why, when and how. Indeed he covers almost everything that I've heard any member question/query/complain/moan about. I should read these more often. That said...the two things I've most recently asked our Golf Manager and Rules Secretary about are not mentioned in the March Minutes, April's are not yet available and so I shall read these with I interest when they are online - hopefully the answers will be documented.

And so...I now know a lot more than I did half and hour ago - and what to say when folks are moaning...'Have you read the Minutes of the Mens Committee Meeting? - it's all there'

Went out last night for the first time in a week or so - course is looking immense.

Greens recovered well from early season works and just - wow. So so good.

Was paying an extra £450 a year worth moving - abso freaking lutely

Greens need a cut, but they have had feed on them and we need rain to wash it into the soil.

Greenkeeper will either cut or roll them in the next day or so depending on their assessment.

The fairways and greens look very good, but the rough hasn't really grown and there are many bald patches of solid ground. It makes the course harder as the ball takes rock hard bounces further into the rough and trees.

Our course is looking in excellent condition and the greens are top notch. Great sand in the bunkers too. They've cut down a lot of the trees that were planted in the 70's which has opened up the course a bit and also provides better light and air to the fairways.

Sprinklers can pool water on the greens
If a granular feed is used it can wash the feed into the low areas this can burn the grass and over feed it.
Most GKs will only feed when rain is forecast as it’s a more even spread of water
We've an ancient irrigation system and on the higher parts of the course we can't get the pressure up there to ensure head to head covearge so have to hand water to ensure an even distrubution

I hate to say it but I played last night and LB isn't looking great, greens and fairways are probably the worst I've seen in the nearly 5 years I've been there. Rumours that the irrigation system is broke - and that's the problem, we haven't had any official emails about the course for weeks, communication is key - good or bad, at least the members would have an informed opinion rather than rumours flying around.

It’s not broke , we are about 3 weeks behind growth due to the cold nights through April where there was frost nearly every morning even though it was sunny during the day , it wasn’t holding the temp at night to get the growth

And the newsletter explained the reason for the lack of growth a couple weeks ago

They should be sending regular emails about it, at the very least it stops the rumours. Glad it's not broken though.

Or just ignore rumours , a weekly newsletter is sent out

If we communicated out any time there were rumours then we would be sending hourly newsletters

Just ask

The weird part is, they’ve always been decent with updates before. That silence now kinda makes you wonder what else isn’t being shared

The difference in the long rough stuff in the space of a week is mad should knock a few points off the average score come Saturdays comp
