How do you chip/pitch in winter?

i really enjoy pitching and chipping, its one of the things where i've seen the most improvement in my game through practice. However our course last weekend was shocking , the rough around the greens was so patchy and hadnt been able to be cut as its been wet.
Trying to pop one over a bunker when its settled down into a bare lie while covered in mud (Q comp so could only clean the ball on short mowed grass)
It was difficult to say the least
You may wish to suggest that your Club move to 'Lift clean & replace' in the General area, to maintain fair Q conditions...... makes so much sense.

Will depend on the green in front

In summer the greens a little firmer and you get a bit more run so will look to drop the ball shorter - in the winter then a bit further up the green

But the technique is no different
Agreed, no change other than determining the amount the ball will roll out on less firm or wet greens

During winter anywhere in the UK grass seed does not germinate & replaced divots don't reknit so fairway mats make a lot of sense to those bothered about their course.... simples

This is what the fairways look like at the moment. Why would I need a mat?e52c1e36-cbd9-4adc-9e91-368e89161396.jpeg

This why people don't understand how other people live.....not like this where I am. Even with good weather this Fall....this is summer grass for us.

Agreed - I posted the photo because 2blue seemed pretty insistent that the whole of the UK is a mudbath where nothing grows. But the south of England is not like that!

Nay lad... I was on a GM Meet a few years ago when we were lucky to get out of Kent when the Beast from the East arrived. We'd already been unable to play RSG due to frozen greens so am well aware that one piccy does not always tell the full story. Even up North it's been an incredible Oct/ Nov this year but it'll be April time, before we start putting our mats away.

I went to the chipping green at my club for an hour or so yesterday, just to get a feel for different lies, and try and boost my confidence a little bit. While distance control needs work, I did leave knowing that I can get a decent strike on the ball and commit to it. I'm going to have a little read of Dan Grieve's book again, specifically the section on selecting a shot based on lie.

I had a foursomes match Saturday, duffed a couple of short chips early on from some funky lies, probably just lacking confidence. But I had a couple of 50 yard pitch shots from grassy lies that I nailed, just committed to hitting fast through the ball and not slowing down - so just better technique really that I should be doing all year round.
