Which tees do you play away?

Just curious how do you choose which tee to play at away courses that have a multitude of options?

E.g. Castle Stuart has Black/White/Green at
7009
6592
6183 yds.

Assuming the weather is ok and there are no forced carries over 200 yds, do you:

— proceed to the back tees (7k+ club )

— take the middle option (still longer than most :))

— or enjoy being at the average length (there is plenty of other challenges in golf already 🤣)

At most courses it will be the yellow tees. None of the people I play with would want to be playing off the back tees but if they did we would just tee off separately.

I played with a pp from my club, @Springveldt and his mate last year. They were both very good and big hitters to boot. We were playing a decent sized course and they wanted to play off the whites. They did that, my mate and I played off the yellows. All worked very well, we all enjoyed our own rounds.

Looking at the options in post #1 I would go with the 6183yd option.

If I was playing in a mixed handicap group I would want to play a set of tees that were between 6150 and 6400 yards.

Alternatively I would look at the par 3's and pick which ever tees resulted in a nice mixture of lengths instead of a tee where the par 3's all end up being 170+ yards long.

I played Castle Stuart last summer and the starter advised the three of us 14.8, 10.2 and 8.4 to play off the greens.

The CS yardage book actually gives guidance...white tees if you are 9 or lower, green if you are 10 or higher, black only by permission from the golf shop.

Looking at the options, if it was just a social round and no score being posted I'd have no issue playing off the 6183yd tees. That's still a decent length course in the UK and will have a variety of holes no doubt.

If I was entering a score for handicap I like playing the longer tees as the course rating goes up which helps with the differentials. Like my current course, it has black at 6729, white at 6529 and yellow at 6197. Given the option I'll play the blacks all day as the course rating is 73.6, white is 72.4 and yellow is only 70.9. I'm as likely to shoot +6 gross on the blacks as I am on the yellows.

Many will only let you play off the tee of the day (yellows). Some including my own will let you choose your own tee. Subject to who I am playing with and the length of the tees I'd prefer to play whites (usually the next set back)

What a shame. Imo hcp is very poor guidance for choosing lengths.

Indeed....but the starter was spot on with his advice to be honest....especially given the weather conditions that hit us half way through the round.

They are only suggestions though, they are not mandatory and I guess that they want you to enjoy your round as much as possible.

6500 is a sweet spot for a good test without being a slog fest for the majority of handicap golfers.

6000 around some wider links courses is too short.

7000+ is a long way no matter what way you dress it up.

The USGA suggest 5900-6100 yards is best for the average male golfer based on 7-iron distance.

However, if we believe how far people claim to hit their 7-iron rather than how far they actually hit it, then 6400-6600 yards is best.

What’s their belief for the average 7i distance? Is there a link where they published this?
