This gloat instils tremendous jealousy - also reminds me, did you ever divulge how long you sat on the waiting list?

Sorry... I think it was about 12 months. (for Country)
Burnham is closed, even joining the waiting list is closed... I know the ladies in the office pretty well from taking a group there for years... I'll give them a ring in the morning!
I think I have been on St Enodoc waiting list for many years, now I wouldnt bother.

Looking for a silver lining to the cloud that has been the rain…had a walk on the course this pm to see how the major winter groundworks carried out to manage and contain heavy rainfall. Well apart for one area they seem to be working well.

But the amount of rain that is sitting in the containment areas…well. The one area where it’s not worked is where a drain from a new raised bunker into a holding pond has acted in reverse when the pond has got full…forcing water up the drainpipe into the bunker then spilling out into an area in front of the green that has flooded.

Without the rain as it has been we would never have spotted this, but now we know this the greens team will plug the drainpipe when there is a risk of the holding pond filling as full as it has done this winter.

But other than that one issue the remodelled groundworks look to be doing what they have been designed to do. Silver lining and all that…

12 months is not bad at all - enjoyed Saunton and if I didn’t finish double/triple/double on the East into a huge wind to lose by 1 to my best mate there I’d have even fonder memories.

That would be hugely appreciated. Expecting it’s a big wait to be honest which is fine, I just want my foot in the door as early as possible.
I got the feeling from speaking to a few at Burnham last summer that they have some rather ambitious plans - the pro mentioned plans of a new clubhouse down by the beach, turn the 2nd into the 1st, 1st into the 18th - use the current car park and clubhouse area for “hospitality” - but he wouldn’t elaborate on what for ?

Gloat alert!

Email from Saunton just now inviting me to a new member morning and comp in a few weeks! Might venture down for a game on Sunday if the weather picks up a bit. :)

Sorry Ian - please can you settle a debate between myself and a friend ?

On Saunton East‘s 13th hole, par 3, as pictured… is a player entitled to relief from the white path to the left of the green - (which was very much in play, due to into crosswind from the right)

If I recall, it’s one of those paths made of white bits of shell, small stones and who knows… all quite crushed up? Not a grassy path.

Scorecard says: “the maintenance track to the right of the 1st hole and all artificially surfaced tracks and paths are treated as immovable obstructions from which relief is allowed under rule 16.1. All other paths are integral parts of the course.”

I would say the is artificially surfaced, it isn't naturally path with crushed up shell on it, so relief is allowed

No idea, I am usually in the horrible front bunker! :ROFLMAO: I new there, and previously only played once a year in the Bideford Bay Pairs... but I am there next (deffo) on 3rd Feb. so will check! If the weather improves I might be there before.

Yeh I went in the front left bunker. My friend went on that path.
Given that the day before, he correctly made me play my ball from the hollowed out path at st enodoc on the 10th, there was no chance I was letting him drop off of that path ?

In this continuing grim weather of rain, rain, rain…my club has today moved from Open/Closed to include a third option for the daily assessment.

The head greenie reviews full course first thing and looks to put together a sequence of holes that can played safely; that won‘t cause ‘churn up’ damage to fairways; without excessive walking from a green to next tee, and advises whether ‘carry only’ or ‘carry only where possible’

And so today its 3-9, 12-14, 17 and 18. Carry Only

I guess it ‘gladdens the heart’ as it enables me to play if I am desperate…today I’m not.

Ours is having to do something similar due to a blocked drain that needs digging up on the first fairway. We start at 5 and play through to 17 then 2,3,4 back to the clubhouse. Due to the layout of the course it flows really well and no big walks between the holes. 5 starts right by the clubhouse as well.

Our problem is not so much the volume of rain…though one day earlier this month we recorded in one day a full rainfall for a normal January…with Novs rainfall being a record for all then years we’ve been recording it. Our big problem is ‘run-off’ from neighbouring farmland that overwhelms even our naturally well-draining underlying sandy soil.

Had a clear out of the spirits cupboard a couple of days ago. Found two bottles of Glayva at the back, one a glass bottle the other a duty free plastic bottle. happy days.
